It's 3/4 of an inch , found in New York , the one in the picture if for reference , mine is to beat up to get a picture . Like to know where it was made , and what was it used for . The age also approx

Hutsitedigger, the backmark in the photo is "BEST STRONG" -- written in Old English Script lettering. The rest is the typical "STANDd" -- which is an abbreviated form of "STANDARD" [quality].

Fano169, if your button is the same as the one in the sample photo (except possibly a different backmark), your button is called a brass 1-piece flatbutton, made for Civilian-clothing use (although a few did get used on Militia uniforms), dates from about 1810 into the 1830s, and was more likely manufactured in Britain than in the US.

If your brass 1-piece flatbutton's backmark is written in "raised" lettering( instead of the "indented" lettering shown in the sample photo, it can date a bit earlier, from the 1790s into the 1830s.

At the top of the first post in this discussion-thread, if you are logged in you'll see a horizontal bar which contains the words "Thread Tools." Click on those words in the bar, and you'll see the option to "Mark this thread as Solved."
