Looking For Rain God's Gold, by Alfred Strong Lewis

I'm looking for a copy of Rain God's Gold by Alfred Strong Lewis. I read about it in Tom Kollenborn's Legends of Superstition Mountain (there is a version here on TN).

If anyone can lead me in the right direction, please send me a PM.

I visited the very nice Superstition Mountain Museum, and I highly recommend a visit if you haven't been there - and even if you have. It is very well-maintained, quite informative, and the volunteers both friendly and helpful. They can't do much about the Arizona heat (100 at 9:00 am) but they put out the welcome mat.

If you can tell me what was the title of Tom's Story in his Legends of Superstition Mountains, I might be able to locate it, but I must see what he was talking about in the story. Cordially, Gregory E. Davis

Sorry Bookaroo..I've looked through every resource I know of, and came up empty handed. WorldCat does not recognize the title. If the book exists, it was published by a private publisher, and all copies are in peoples collections.

Did find some references to Alfred Strong Lewis, but none of it referred to him authoring any books.

Tom Kollenborn's Legends of Superstition Mountain (1982; 2004) states on page 6:

"There is not one shred of evidence to suggest the Peraltas ever mined gold in the Superstition Mountain or that they were massacred by the Apaces. Alfred Strong Lewis, in his manuscript, Rain God's Gold, theorized that the Peraltas or Spainards worked the rich gold fields four miles northeast of present day Apache Junction."

The "Tale of the Lost Dutchman" website bibliography entry for Barry Storm states:

"Swanson and Kollenborn cryptically remark in their In the Shadow of the Superstitions that a young mining engineer, Alfred Strong Lewis, '...was the author of Rain Gods Gold, and his manuscript was probably the source of Barry Storm's book Thunder God's Gold.'"

Now that I've been asked, I can't find where I saw the reference to the SMHS. Sometimes memory serves - at my age, sometimes it double-faults.

Any assistance you may render will, of course, be greatly appreciated!

Good morning Old Bookaroo: Rain Gods Gold by Alfred Strong Lewis NEVER EXISTED. I knew Tom very well for many years and we worked together locating books, manuscripts etc. on the Superstition Mountain Legends. Rain Gods Gold was not one of them. Tom got the titles of two books and a chapter title from Lewis manuscript mixed up. "When the Rain Gods Made Man and Saga of Superstition Mountain." and the chapter title Roll of the Rain Gods" from Lewis' Manuscript. What you are actually looking for is the manuscript, "Saga Of Superstition Mountain by Alfred Strong Lewis." The manuscript was written circa 1945-49. I have a copy of the original manuscript in my collection. The Superstition Mountain Museum reprinted it several years ago under the project. Rare Book Reprints. Give them a call and see if they still have some in the file cabinet in the back storage room. Dave at the museum would be the one to talk to.
