Found this digging around on a state park beach in NC this past week. Have no idea what it is made of, but it is a relatively heavy metal. This pic shows both sides of the coin. This may not be the correct forum, this is m first visit by the way. Just wondering if you guys had any pointers or ideas of how to find out. Thanks image.webp

Not neccessarily in value, but great cool factor.

I'm no expert, so I'll sit back and wait.

Just remember that there are counterfeits out there.

what color is it? Did you clean it? It looks copper.

Never cleaned it. It's actually more gold in color, with some faded darker spots. It does have what appears to be a seem on the edge, but I don't know what that could mean

Welcome to Treasure Net !!
If real, Spanish cob coin, Mexico City mint.
Weigh for denomination: 27g = 8-reales; proportionately less for 4- 2- and 1- reales coins.
Don.........

Does it stick to a magnet? Weight and size? Compare thickness to a US coin and let us know.

I'm hoping for your sake its right but a seam is a bad sign and often indicates a fake. You could always ask at a coin dealers but if he says its fake but makes an offer, run and sell elsewhere.

Still an interesting find though.

Great find!

But watch out - State Park Beaches in NC are off limits to metal detectors! You can lose your detector and be fined (assuming you used one - you said you dug it so I suppose you could have happened on it in the sand while just relaxing). Although even that I think could get you fined since the law says you can't take anything older than 100 years from a state park? The laws in NC are pretty strong against metal detecting.

So was it Outer banks area, or closer to Wilmington? Just curious. No need to reply if you need to be secret or whatever. :)

Nice find!

Your screen name makes me laugh though. The most awkward duck ever
