I had found this coin a few weeks back at the German POW camp It appears to be copper and detected as a penny. It is slightly larger than a regular penny. I have spent about eight hours total researching it, obviously in all the wrong places. On one side of the coin, which I believe it to be the front, it has the word MARINVS on top. At the bottom , which has been a bit smashed says, AC or possibly AS XXVlll . See what you think. The reverse is a design, nothing more. It does to be a bit off center. Any help appreciated, HH Art...

Well I received an email back from stacks.com today and here is their opinion:

Dear Art,

This is not a coin, but a token of some sort. The trident symbol on the front can be interpreted as a Tamglia (Turkish brandmark, clan symbol) while the mystic know on the reverse is a common Turkish image of symbol. The name on the token is Latin, so this may be a token from a Italian Trading Colony in the Crimea, 13-1400?s.

I am still researching, a bit better lead now, keep you all updated, HH Art...

Hi. I don't know if any of these bits of information from googling help, but they might point you in the right direction.

...Finds. Some small fragments of early pottery, among them one of a decorated bowl of Terra Sigillata (Type,
Dragendorff 37) with transition decoration; part of a mortarium with the stamp MARINVS; and some leather. A 'second brass'
coin of Domitian (Type, Forunae Augusti), struck during the eleventh consulship of the Emperor, A.D. 85.

According to this site, MARINVS is that latin translation of "Martin", the name of a Pope.

Oc. (latin, "marin", "de mer")

This says the latin translation of MARINVS of MARIN is "husband".

No, i's not a Roman Marinus coin. It looks medieval to me. A German soldier probably carried it for good luck.

Thanks, I tend to believe possibly medieval but not sure. I sent an email with some pics to Cambridge University to see if they can help, I'll keep you all posted, Art...

Send these guys an e-mail along with where you found it and the pics:

Thanks DJ, I sent them an email as well and no response as of today, Art...
