I am new to metal detecting and found this stifel tag in a rural town in south africa. I read up about stifel & sons but I cannot find something similar posted before. I would love to know the year of manufacture, the history of this tag.. Any info. Anyone has info or found something similar?
welcome aboard and good luck on the ID

If you can get a copy of this magazine, it might give you your answer.

The boot with 'STIFEL' inside it was inspired by a boot incorporated within the family coat of arms, which one of the family designed (it wasn't actually a true heraldic coat of arms). 'Stifel', or rather it's alternative spelling of 'stiefel' means 'boot' in German.
The trademark itself was said by the family to have been created at "the turn of the century" although it doesn't seem to have usage before about 1910.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I will try to get a copy of the magazine. Very cool.

Here's the original family coat of arms with a lion holding a boot which inspired the later boot trademark.
