This is a 1 5/8" sterling thing of a cricket, or grasshopper, wearing a cap and shoes, standing next to a golf ball.

There's no mechanism for mounting. Nothing for turning it into jewelry. On the back is stamped sterling. Twice.

Anyone recognize the logo?

Anyone have a guess as to what it might have been for? With sterling stamped into the back, it wouldn't have been mounted onto something, like a plaque or award. Nothing to make it jewelry. It doesn't stand on its own.

So what is it, and why is it?

One thing that is odd to us about the piece is the unevenness of the back. Like it was handmade. One would expect the back would be smooth if it was from mold. The front appears to have been in a mold by the amount of detail. There's even a little something on the hat.

Regarding Grasshopper Golf in SC, all references to their golfgrasshopper.com seem to have gone kaput.

I couldn't find a Grasshopper Golf Ball company. I had already found grasshopper.golf, but I'm fairly certain it's unrelated. I emailed them anyway, it cannot hurt to be sure.

At this point, I'm game for anything. (see what I did there?)

I emailed them about it.

I would certainly bank on a ball marker
very cool item
Brady

Here are some custom die-cast ball markers I found. They are not silver, but there is no reason they couldn't be if you've got the money to spend.

1 1/2 inch diameter.

Makes sense being a ball marker now. I could see someone laying it on the ground and forgetting to pick it up. This thing could have some value to a collector of vintage golf items if you can pin down the who, what, when and why coupled to it. It's probably a very limited item being they took the expense of casting it in sterling silver.

I'm sorry, that's just rude. I would never say that of a silver coin that you found with your Garrett.
You didn't seriously take that as a derogatory statement did you :icon_scratch: B of the B was just pointing out the fact of its value in silver.

I bet, though, that if you flipped those markers over they'd have smooth, finished backs, whereas this items back is more handmade-ish.

Well, I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to...

Ball markers usually aren't 3 dimensional. They have to be flat when laid on the surface, in case a ball would roll over it. My first thought was a divot repair tool, but everything I see online has spikes to lift the grass up from the divot just made. I also was thinking Jiminy Cricket. Maybe a ball marker from the Disney World Golf Resort??? If you look at the images of Jiminy, he is wearing a top hat and spats..... https://www.google.com/search?q=jim...jc7SAhXGOCYKHedtAjoQ_AUIBygC&biw=1094&bih=723
