Statue of Liberty Medal?

Found this a few years back. About the size of a silver dollar. Not sure what it is made of. Kind of heavy for its size. Looks to be a picture of the designer of the Statue of Liberty on one side, and the other side has the Statue itself. There is some writing on it, and it does look like a date under the Statue that matches when it was made.

I have tried to research, but no luck. Does anyone out there have any ideas? Thanks for looking.

Well, actually all I can find is reproductions... Apparently the originals were minted in France (in bronze) to help raise funds for the creation of the actual statue. That would be a heck of a find if it's original!!!

Awesome nhbenz!! That is it!!!

I looked on the net and could not find anything. I am thinking, it is probably a reproduction, as I found it at an old home dating to about 1890 here in central Illinois. It is heavily pitted. Does bronze do this? I am not sure what it is made of. And what would I use to clean it up better? So far, just soap and water, and then about a week in olive oil.

I'm not the best person to ask about coin cleaning, since I would probably use the wire-wheel in my shop. But theres a whole section of TreasureNet that deals with cleaning and restoration with varied techniques from electrolysis to safe chemical baths to my favorite "a good dose of leaving it alone". I can't help you ID it but it is a very cool find.

Be very careful if you try to clean it. Remember, you can't undo damage you might inflict if you clean it.
