Well, things are looking up a little. No....absolutely nothing to get excited about until you know the story. I have been researching the location of "the old picnic grove" outside of town. In the process, while driving the road it is on, I spotted a really old house. I stopped to chat with the owner to see if he knew anything that would help me find what I was looking for.

I always admire the old houses and complement anything I can about the architecture etc. to befriend the owner. In the conversation, he said "yep, lots of history on this property. My uncle from Canton has come down a bunch of times with his metal detector and checked the yard". My heart sunk....lol......I then confessed that is where I was headed and was going to ask if he would allow me.

He said, "sure go ahead, he might have missed something".

Well, as I ended the hunt, he asked what I had found. There was nothing too exciting, and I wasn't conserned he would be sorry he allowed me to hunt, so I showed him my finds.

His comment was, "wow, my uncle didn't find any coins at all, just an old gas wall sconce and some brass kerosine lantern parts.

This sent home to me two points I think are important to remember.
#1. I am starting to learn my new detector a little better.......which we all need to do. and....
#2. Don't be descurraged just because an area has already been hunted before.
Here are my finds from today......mostly clads.........one 1920 wheat

This is a very old house, and I am sure there are coins much older than the 1920 wheat.....I will go back sometime!

Sounds like you are getting the 'hang of it'. Did he give you any leads to the grove you where searching for? You might want to swing by with some type of gift for him allowing you to detect, might help grease the wheel for more detecting on his place or others..... ;D

Good idea about the gift 49'er.....and only theories about the grove.....but I'm getting closer. There is a grove of very, very, large old pine trees close by. I am thinking that is about the right spot, but still working on it.

remember though, pine trees grow very fast, if you want to find the old places, look for cedar trees (big ones), elm, and oak, they all grow slow
good luck

Not a bad hunt! I am sure you know to check the sunny sides of the houses where a clothes line is/was. That old house may have had an outhouse, I always wanted to dig one out. The line from the house to outhouse would be a good idea, LOL, imagine flying suspenders and flapping pockets on the race to the outhouse. Were you in town or out in Wiltshire? I would think that Burfield's strawberry farm, think they changed owners/name since then, would be a great place if you can get on those fields, people have been picking their own strawberries for a very long time there and probably dropped all kinds of coins and rings. If you know any hunters in the area, ask them if they know of any old foundations in the deep woods, I can't think of any right off hand. I would enjoy seeing pictures of the sites you hunt. Do you know about that sports park and picnic area in Dover, Dice Hill? There is a nice sledding hill there that comes off the top where the picnic area is, it was always packed there with sledders when I was a kid. Good luck, keep in touch and HH, Mike

Hi Mike,
The picnic grove I am researching is on the North East corner of Wilkshire. When I was at the old house last week here in town (where I found nothing) :-( I was speeking with Verna Mauer. She is 98. I asked here if there was ever an old picnic grove outside of town where people went way back. She said sure.....up by the old school foundation. **PERK**.....

Long story short....she described a grove where a school house burnt down in about 1905. People used to go there for picnics after church. It is very near the old Liebold farm house. In fact the properties probably boarderd back then.

The problem is......that whole area is now under new ranch houses, unless I am right about that one little grove. I may be 15 years too late for that one. lol

Yes you got the hang of it. Just because someone tell you it been hunted before dose ot mean it is hunted out. Nice finds hopes he lets you back to hunt some more....Matt

looks like your off to a good start :icon_thumright:

I didn't know about the old school house, what a bummer development can be. If you get a chance, go by the library and get some local history books, a little research might pay off greatly! I detected the elementary school and the damn has a play ground, last time I was back, only found a few coins but the playground at the school looked like it was new. HH, Mike
