Hello Forum,

I was wondering if anyone can help me identify this item that I found by the Erie Canal. I found similar images of coins on the internet. I think this is tin or copper. IMG_0353.JPG

It's an 1893 Columbian Exposition award medal (or copy).

Thanks Charlie, but this is not a coin or medal it appears to be stamped.

Does it look like it could have been a lid? Do you see any evidence of a hinge at one time? I was thinking maybe something akin to this...

It's from the Bernheim Bros. for their Harper whiskey. Probably nailed to the product (on the case maybe?)

Found this, if it helps.

"The most common variety of the official 1893 World's Fair Exposition award medal is the 76.3mm bronze version, which came in a white metal case."
"The medal in this size also was produced as a uniface specimen that could be placed on plaques."

Also, as suggested by nhbenz:
(One similar award also had holes such as this with the suggestion it was to hang on the bottle at the fair.)

The sizes mentioned don't seem to match up for this to be a uniface version of a medal, which are about 3 inches, where the one in the listing mentions the diameter is about 2 inches. That seller has a couple of others listed from different expositions, all seemingly nailed onto something. -tried to link to them, but it didn't work?

Wow! This has become very interesting! My medal is 2" in diameter. Thanks everyone for the input. I wish I could find a picture of the medal fixed to something. If I can find this it would be neat to display together. Thanks again!
