Just watched a tv programe about pilgrims walking to the shrine of Saint James in Spain. When they got there they would buy badges in the emblem of Saint James. These badges were in the shape of a scallop shell. This reminded me of an old find, a search through many boxes was required. The item looks like it was once tinned. The wet appearance is actually 15 year old olive oil that didn't dry properly. When I first found it I guessed it was just a leather decoration, maybe 17th Century. Not so sure now ???.

Wow wouldn't that be cool to put that together after all this time. It's ever evolving and were always learning something new!

Nice rediscovery!

Very initeresting piece, it's a mystery to me what it is or how it attached, but my first thoughts are like yours. Post-Medieval. Most of the Pilgrim Shells I have seen are not that shape, so I did a quick search & found the following:
UK Finds Database - - - UKDFD
It seems likely to me that its of a simlar period but I would love to know what it attached to?

You might want to repost that picture in the help section in order to get more replies.

Cheers Cru, not sure if it was attached to anything. With the plate on the back, it may have been designed to hold something.

It's nice to dig out old finds and get the information on them :icon_thumleft: It survived ebay well :laughing7:

Hello Colin , don't talk to me about ebay !. Got my first bad feedback not long since. Sold a fairly rare Nottinghamshire token (didn't put a reserve on it , like a fool) for the princely sum of £10.11 (worth at least £100). Then the guy starts quibbling of postage, a whopping £2. A big mistake, I refunded him is money, and told him where to go. Still that's life, can't please everyone. If it is a sort of pilgrim item, it certainly will make the pilgrimage to ebay though. Copper finds simply begin to deteriorate.

Been there, I have had the same clown leave bad feedback twice, the first time over postage, and the second when I wouldn't send him a item he won :laughing7: because he had left me negative.
