I took advantage of the better weather today and needed to get out and at least swing the detector for a couple hours, not really caring if I got some goodies or not. So I went to one of my December sites and was surprised to see a snow shower dusted the ground in that area.
Although I got no old coins today, don't think a 2002 clad dimes counts as old ::) I did at least get 4 relics that are old, so that was some consolation.

The biggest surprise of the day was that after quite a few days of not getting above freezing the ground in the woods was not frozen at all in most spots and the worst I encountered was about 2-3 inches of frozen stuff in areas without much leaf litter. But the sharpened dry wall hammer had no trouble cutting plugs out to expose soft, sandy soil underneath the was easy to dig.

So, a bunch of junk today, plenty of shotgun casings, and other stuff, (I hunted close to a road where people dumped trash over the years :() But I was pleased to get two old one piece buttons (one with three holes drilled in it) and a very heavy handle section of a old pewter spoon, and one piece of flat engraved metal with a beautiful design on it. Oh, my first recovery of the year was the 2002 clad dime. ;D

Here also is my "digger" accessory of choice when hunting with ground that is frozen say 1-4 inches. It also is great for chopping thru roots. A drywall hammer with the blunt ended blade sharpened. Hang it on a hammer belt and it is readily accessible for use..

I never thought i would live to see the day when you posted a clad dime :D .. I am surprised (and pleased ) to hear that the ground is not frozen solid...It is going to be more mild for a few days.

I may start carrying one of those hammers as protection so I can detect in Camden and Trenton!!

Happy New Year,
Neil

I said earlier the holed button seemed different, and I still think I never found one this size that was sort of dimpled like it is, maybe I have but none that I can remember. I was pleasantly surprised to see a cute punched Flower design on this button. Why the three holes are there, I most likely will never know.

Pendant turned into a whizzer after the gilding wore off?

Glad to hear you could get out Don.I did some river hunting the other day.....I figgered that the ground would be unfrozen underwater.....I was right.....but OMG it was cold !!!! My first finds of the year were a tincan and a rusty nail...but it was fun and I havent given up....just ordered some full arm waterproof gloves ! ;D

Cold there it looks Don,cold here to buddy our snow is suppose to happen later tonight.I think getting out is half the fun for sure so glad you got out buddy.I've never had my rig in the snow. Does it change anything for you in the snow.I'd think it be like around the river a little having some false beeps now and then :dontknow: with out the salt. :laughing9: I got mine over ice some today but could not tell it was messing with it any. Take Care!
Pete, :hello:

hey congrats on just getting out this early in the season Don , sometimes its just great to swing the coil with no expectations but you did well , sir. i use a small hatchet and hang it on the same setup as you to chop through the few inches of frost as well . lets hope it turns more mild real soon , take care .

What I like about the drywall hammer is, long sleek thin shaft which allows for chopping thru roots in a deep, smaller diameter hole , and probably a tad lighter than a bigger hatchet head, but either way, it is a way of allowing to hunt when a few inches of frozen turf is out there....

Nice hunt Don.

I think I'm done here in IL until March or so. ???....unless I get a wild hair. ;D

Glad to see you got out for a hunt Don, you got some nice finds for your efforts. I was going to hit one of my places (woods) driving home from work yesterday but there was a lot of snow, also I went out last week where I live but the woods up here (Warren County) are a little rocky, mixed with the tree debris and snow, it wasn't much fun. Good luck on your next trip out !

Nice hunt and finds Don! That button is unusual and made me wonder if it could be a pipe lid? Do you have a picture of the reverse? HH, Mike

Mike, I had no doubt it was a button (Flower design plus remains of the shank)and I am still fairly certain I have no buttons like this type in my collection that is of such an old age. The recessed area I believe is what makes it different and do not think it happened when the holes were punched in but possible.
