Square colonial rosette?

I found this brass relic yesterday at a Colonial site that was occupied for a brief period by British troops. It has four tangs on the back, presumably for fastening to leather. Any input will be appreciated-thanks!

Both, many of these 18th C leather mounts went on the civvy heavy horse, ones like this could have gone on the blinker.

Funny enough I just saw a square leather mount very similar to yours on the blinker to a donkey. So it could be of a pack mule or blinker that help military or civvy alike.
