I know I've seen something like this before. It's kinda shaped like a spring I've seen inside one the kids toys before. I was thinking firearm related, but I'm not familiar with firearms. All the illustrations I have seen online of firearm parts don't really have a spring that looks like this. Maybe from a clock? Any ideas? Found in the woods. No known past structures nearby just an old trail with some history. Looks too fragile to attempt a cleaning of it. I'd like to see if there is a screw hole in the wide base part seen in picture 2.

Cool. Thanks for the info guys. Learn something new every day.
Horse shoe nail makes sense since there is a bridle trail about 150 feet from where I found it. I was actually out looking for part of an old trail (~1760's) that intersects the one still in existence. Perhaps I'm on to something. ;D

Agreed. Horse shoe nail. Had one shaped exactly like that (the head) that was fashioned into a ring. My little sister was rushed to the emergency room to have hers cut off when her too tight ring turned her finger blue.
