Hi all,
Haven't had much trouble Id'ing items lately (mostly clad and pulltabs, though with the early spring here in the NE that will hopefully change soon).
This spooky silver figure has me stumped and, frankly, gives me a touch of the "willies". I am visiting my parents and this afternoon I noticed this little figure sitting on their kitchen table. Recognizing it as old, and likely silver, I inquired as to where they got it. They apparently picked up off the "free table" at a local auction. The usual selection on the "free table" consists of mugs, chipped dishes, tupperware covers and odd flatware. This was a very unusual find.
- Stands approximately 2.5 inches high
- Tests right around .999 silver (Ag)
- Aztec, Maybe Hindi?
- It is not solid - the base at least is filled with a brown organic substance - some type of resin or peat maybe - not wood. Also - I couldn't resist poking at the substance with a poker (safety pin) and some of it crumbled it and it was filled with little brown bugs (dead).
It reminds me of the fetish or effigy from the movie exorcist - so its a little freaky, and the bugs don't help.
Any ideas on the culture depicted, the age or the use?
Thanks so much for your time.
RR
