back in the 80s i did underground utility work, we had a couple machines called
moles, torpedo's or missiles that would do directional bore holes under roads so you didn't have to dig up
the asphalt. they worked off of hydraulics. some times when you were doing a really
long bore they would get hung up and you couldn't get them back and lost them.
they were shaped like what you have and designed to go thru just about anything.
the tip like yours was replaceable so when they got dull or lost the whole thing was not a total loss.
it looks like the tip of yours has a carbide tip welded onto it. i don't think that was available more
than 40 years ago
