Hi Mojjax, I should have given details on where I found it.... :icon_scratch: It was in a yard of a house that was built in the late 1800's...We are clearing around it and have uncovered ungodly amounts of old bottles and other whatchamaits... this was one we found yesterday...

Could be!

Havent really looked into it yet.

Thank You  :coffee2:

I've seen similar pieces used to split wood. A wooden piece was put in the end with the hole which was then pounded on. It almost looks like this piece has some mushrooming. Like it was pounded on without the wood insert. Hard to tell from the pictures though. Could be way off...

Makes sense...this house has had many attempts at getting water supplied to it...

Maybe from the top of and old wrought iron fence around the lawn.
I have seen many of these, but not sure if they were that long.
Just a guess,
Clayton

:icon_scratch: I think PIKE not spike? A Pike was used by infantry up into the 1700's. Some were solid metal and some were designed as spear heads to be mounted on poles prior to the invention of the bayonet. Just a thought. Here's a picture.

This thing weighs 2 pounds...too heavy for fence also(no others found), too heavy for "PIKE" pole/spear...doesnt look to be made for weapon...and i believe it would be too heavy for tripod feet...ty all.

Im looking for an older version of this "well point"...none of the ones I found are even similar to this.

Hi Michelle, does that thing look like the tip has been welded or is a different type of metal? I thought it does in 4th pic. If so it is hardfacing, it is done to different tools to make them harder and wear resistant.

Here's my SWAG (Scientific wild ass guess). It was a piece that was pounded into the ground and was used as a flag pole holder. Good a guess as any.

Hope you find out.

no thats where some dirt collected on it...have to clean it better....doesnt look like a weld or hardfacing has been done on it...

its an aerator spike of from a roller type aerator used to cure soil compaction. other types used would pull cores out of the ground and are used more for root aeration. the type you found can be had as long as 24 inches. ive seen these at a local irrigation shop that i get some plumbing supplies from. i think they are attached just by driving them on with a hammer as they have a slight taper to them. was it found in a vertical position? if so it would stand to reason that it pulled of from its mount. i tried to load a pic but it says that it cant load that type of file. ??? maybe someone can google one and get it to load. dave
