Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
its my girlfriends 25th birthday today. ive been using my excalibur 2 for a while now, and she's developed an interest. so for her birthday, i got her an AT pro from kellyco with all the accessories. we hit up a local beach that isnt very well visited(she was nervous about detecting in front of people). we found a few bottle caps, not much else. then just seconds before turning and heading up to the car, i get a signal by the water. then i dug out this silver coin. i cant really tell exactly what it is. shes pretty crusty. can anyone shed some light on what i should do to clean her up?? photo.webp

Looks like a partially plated morsel of french toast! Were you ever able to determine what it really is?:dontknow:

Looks like a nice cob to me.
Congratulations!
Give it a quick bath in muriatic acid and water 50/50 and see how that does.
Here is one very similar that got an acid bath.

French toast? Haha.. must not have seen a beach found cob before.
Guessing by its size in your palm I'd say it's at least a 1 reale.

what is a cob?

Definition: A cobis a coin of irregular shape (but generally round) that was produced by striking the metal blank with two dies with a hammer from around 1500 the mid-1700s. Most were struck at Spanish mints in Mexico, Peru, and Colombia and others.

Haha.. while your eating corn and French toast I'll hunt for Spanish silver... :-)

haha! its a pretty thin coin. definitely silver, and definitely a cob. i can see what looks like possibly a cross. hard to really tell exactly what it is. i was reading about electrolysis and from what i hear, its not recommended on old silver. i just want to make sure im doing the right thing before i do something stupid!!!

edit: when you say "quick acid bath", how quick are we talking??

Electrolysis is always used on old silver coins.
Acid bath will not hurt it if it is silver... that's just the nature of the metal.
Put it in for about 1 minute.. then remove it and see how it looks.
Depending on how shiny you want it you can leave it in as long as you want.
If you want to look up on the Internet "how to clean shipwreck cobs" you need to use those words.
I don't know where you got your information but it couldn't be more incorrect.
Don't be scared... dilute the acid more if it makes you feel better it's not going to hurt the coin.
You probably will not even need to bother with electrolysis.
Let it soak in fresh water overnight afterwards to remove any residual acid.

Congrat on an unexpected find. Any chance you can take a close up picture of both sides? Can't really make out much in the posted pic.
