I'm happy to report a couple of personal firsts in a short hunt this week.
At the early 1800s home I have recently been searching I stopped for a one hour hunt, but left after only fifteen minutes. After digging only three plugs (and finding two excellent targets), my curiosity got the best of me and I hurried home to clean the coins and see what had been found. The first target was a small silver disc that was worn virtually smooth on one side. It is the thinnest coin I've ever found, not much thicker than the tab of a pull tab. I've come to learn it is a spanish 1/2 real, the first Spanish silver I've ever found as well as the oldest coin I've ever found. It is a pillar-type half real that reads "CAR. III" on one side, and I can make out the last zero in the date on the opposite side. That should make the coin a 1760 or a 1770. A pretty rough-looking coin, but boy am I thrilled!
The second happy surprise was a 1839 matron large cent in decent condition. It appears to me to be the "booby head" version of the coin. I'm really pleased with both coins, and especially pleased because both coins were holed, the first holed coins I've found. The largie was apparently holed with a square nail, much like Don's beautiful Flowing Hair LC on the banner. Since my two holed coins were found only five feet apart, do you think they could have been lost at the same time? Both coins came with mixed iron/zinc signals, and in each hole I found a nail along with the coin. Steve
