Spanish gold and silver on NJ beach - from 1781 shipwreck

You could go up there right now its only 12 hours away from florida.Theres a few problems. You will have to bring enough fuel with you as theres none to be had in that area.If there is some its being rationed and the lines are very long.I doupt the local popo will let you on the beaches due to damage done by the storm as some houses maybe totally destroyed or washed away.If you were a resident this wouldnt be a problem.Best is to wait till they get the mess cleaned up.The treasure will still be there and you may find some modern stuff that washed out of homes.

As far as the Strathmere site I have personally been there about six times. I've known about it producing coins for over three years. All anyone had to do was do a little detective work on the internet and glean information about dredging operations and doing Google searches on coins being found in the area or other areas for that matter. I know of many NJ, DE and MD beaches that are producing coins. I also own many books on coin beaches, shipwrecks etc. When you do your research it usually pays off better than just going blindly to a beach. It wasen't until my third trip down to Strathmere that I was rewarded with a nice 1777 8 Reale that is pictured as my profile pic. I've heard about some of the bad feelings between some of the people that hunt down there but I have also met some new friends as well that enjoy the hobby as much as I do. The storms that remove the sand that uncover the coins we seek have to have waves that come from a certain direction and intensity and after that storm the winds need to come from a different direction to push the water away to keep the waves from bringing in the sand that re-cover those same coins. So it's really a matter of being in the right place at the right time. In the last two weekend's I've recovered eleven shipwreck coins in Delaware and my friends that hunted with me found around fifteen thanks to Hurricane Sandy. And that was after the beached had been re-sanded after a week. For more info and photos check out: SPHRG NEWS

Just curious if anyone has ventured to Corson's Inlet NJ since Sandy hit?

Well it happens to be a "State Park" at Corson's Inlet, so if it is a honey hole it would not be a surprise there. However, looking over the maps there were a couple of blackened areas SE of there.

So if you happen to be out fishing might want to see if there is anything there

I'm making plans to head out there before the end of spring. Just received my new DD coil and extended sand scoop.

I will be heading there this weekend. Has anyone ever found out whether or not permits are needed for the Strathmere side of the bay? Based on some of the posts I would say not, but I will still stay off the dunes.

With 20 years on the South Jersey beaches stay away from the dunes. After Sandy and the replenishments of dunes up and down the coast they will be waiting to grab hunters this year. I have found with police and other town officials if you fill your holes and they see you enough they usually leave you alone.

I am actually omw to strathmere as I type this. Anyone who wants to join me, I'll be wearing a blue sweatshirt, black sweats and a flyers hat. And I will carefully be avoiding dunes.

That beach will humble you in minutes I spent alot hours there and found a few reales

Was down to Strathmere, NJ the day after Hurricane Arthur passed and there was hardly any beach left. Its all underwater at high tide all the way up to the rocks. Hunted 8:45pm low tide Saturday and got a 1-45 signal on my ETrac which I thought was a 8 Reale for sure but out came a heavy 925 Silver ring instead. It was brown with corrosion but cleaned up nice and fits perfect.

BVI Hunter, please email me so I have your address to send the pictures
no ones going to email you for pics. Just post them already. Post them in your South Africa thread you started. Just be sure not to disclose any info that would give any clues to your location. Everyone would love to look at the photos and offer real opinions

In the spirit of helping others make their find of a lifetime I have researched some information and confirmed a great location for finding Spanish 8 reales and Spanish gold coins from a shipwreck that went down in 1781 in southern New Jersey. All the coins that have been found to date at this location are from 1781 and earlier

My detecting buddy was on the site and was shown a number of the 8 reales and gold coins found by someone who frequently detects there himself. There are about 50 guys that detect here that keep this location close to the vest from everyone else well that is about to change right now. EVERYONE should have the opportunity to detect there and maybe make their find of a lifetime. The area is known as Strathmere Beach - Roosevelt Blvd off the Garden State Hwy then head south.

Apparently, there were HUNDREDS of these reales/doubloons found over the last few years on the shore (not in the surf) after a dredging operation dumped sand from Corson Inlet onto the beach. Once the finds were discovered by the local authorities, they now have included an archeologist on the dredging ship and now use a screen at the intake area to catch any coins that might get sucked up.

My research indicates that the ship that went down is The Fame which was an American privateer. In 1781 she was sailing off the coast of New Jersey.
According to Walter and Richard Krottee's book Shipwrecks Off the New Jersey Coast: "She had captured a number of heavily laden prizes just before she Foundered" on February 22, 1781. The Fame went down north of Peck's Beach. The location of this wreck is unknown but she is believed to be a treasure site."

However based on the dredging and dump site where the artifacts were found we can now determine that The Fame actually went down much further south than Pecks Beach (which is now known as Ocean City, NJ) at Corson Inlet at the Strathmere Bay area on the ocean.

You can be sure that I will be there next big storm - hurricane or noreaster - looking for my gold doubloon or piece of eight. See you all there if you're 6 hours away its worth the trip

Email me for more exact location on the beach in the dunes where coins were found

Good hunting,

Don

That's pretty much that whole beach in the middle picture, however I know of no one whose detected the northern portion of the inlet.
