At less than 3" tall, crudely formed, terra cotta, and with a top that can't be sealed... I say it served no useful purpose and it's either someone's art project, a miscellaneous souvenir / trinket, or a toy for something like a doll. Not more than 150 years old. A photo of the bottom could really help. I'm going with miscellaneous souvenir / trinket.

yep your close with the age range. If its not a finial or archeticual decoration of some sort, a keepsake or trinket makes sense as well.

I'm not being snarky but in case you don't know, terra cotta - fired clay - will feel like stone. It's not soft and pliable like unfired clay would be.

Definition of terra-cotta
1 : a glazed or unglazed fired clay used especially for statuettes and vases and architectural purposes (as for roofing, facing, and relief ornamentation); also : something made of this material
2 : a brownish orange
