Not an expert here, but from reading a little online....

Name: HOWARD GRIFFIN
Assigned unit: T-1148 T-43
Next of kin? MR. J.D. GRIFFIN
Next of kin address: BOX 632
SEMINOLE OKLS

P = Protestant (religion)
O = blood type.

I'd guess military

T-43 is for Typhoid immunization in 1943. No idea on the T-1148 right now.

Later in the war they did away with the NOK Next Of Kin information on dog tags. You could post this on the US Militaria Forum to learn more on it.

Do not US military dog-tags carry blood group and religious persuasion as well as an identification number (but not home/postal address)?
You are correct Red-Coat. No home or address.

That's a great but sobering find. Those glider pilots suffered some really bad landings/crashes.

Do you plan to see if you can return it to a family member, assuming they can be found?

I was in the Navy 8 years, still have my dog tags and the only things on them were MY name, MY SS # MY blood type and MY religious preference..

So I know that NOW its your SS #, but back in the day it was a SERVICE # which was different than your SS # apparently the T-1148 is his SERVICE # T-43 I don't know, but might be the year he enlisted.. he was KIA in 1944.

Just so everyone knows, I submitted a picture of this to that historic website and requested information to some NOK to return this to if they know of anybody...
Chester S.C. is a long way from Oklahoma .... He died in France in Normandy, so this must have been returned to his father maybe ?
Maybe he lived in Chester after the war and somehow lost it in the yard after that... clearly it was not buried with him..

Thanks for your service. What rate were you? I was MMN for 12 years.
My dog tags also didn’t look like this. One of the links I posted shows a brief timeline of the changes dog tags have seen over the years.

Wow. I am so glad you were able to find it and save it. Hopefully you will be able to find out more about him and his family and maybe a clue as to how it ended up in South Carolina. Thanks for sharing it with us.
