I put in a lot of time researching new cellar holes, looking for ones that haven't been completely hammered. It's hard because we have so many hunters and hikers and detectorists in this state and there are always people in the woods. I can find modern trash in the woods miles from any standing home.
When I do find a new spot, I dream of finding reales, capped bust coins, GWIs, Rev War buttons and relics. While I have been lucky enough to cross a few items like these off my lists, there are several that elude me.
I went to a permission earlier today that has a standing 1840s home, long abandoned, with an earlier starter home cellar slightly behind the home and up the hill. I've been here a couple times and have gotten a mix of finds, some I've pictured below. Colonial coins, buttons, relics, then it moves into the mid 19th century and up into the 20th century.
The shield nickel was high on my list and I'm very fortunate to find it in the condition it is in. With was in a patch of .22 casings that were all ringing up the same as the nickel. I almost gave up but glad I didnt. The KG was straight up and down in the old cart path. It's pretty toast but luckily there is a date of 1775. Could be a counterfeit but either way its saved from its eventual demise in the ground.
After putting a few hours in there, I returned home and found myself still itching to find something good. I pack everything back up and went to the park down the street. I was digging wheaties left and right and was pretty content, waiting for that merc or rosie to find its self in the mix. Then I got a bouncy 19-23 signal and predicted another wheatie.
Boy was I wrong. 7 inches down a tiny dark silver showed itself. My first capped bust coin! 1835 half dime! I've never found anything this old at the park and I wouldn't have guessed there was one hiding there! I was in a daze after finding it and couldn't concentrate on much else so I called it a day.
Thanks for looking.
