Thanks for the input. It was just interesting that the indentions follow the "design". Hard to imagine how nature did that!
 

In the Willamette Valley of Oregon, this would be a no-brainer.

Here it would be considered a net weight for fishing. Fairly common in my area. Almost always has grooves worn into the rock where attached with sinew, rawhide or rope made of horsehair and/or honeysuckle.
