Something else that won't be IDed NEW PICS ADDED

I don't know why all but two of the what is its? That I have posted have never been identified before and I sure this will just be one more to add to the list.

I found this item 7 inches deep. It gave me the same reading that a CW bullet would give but with a co-located iron signal as well so I dug it up. When I found it I thought it was a canning jar lid and tossed it in the bag but I knew it was way to heavy for a canning jar lid.

When I got it home and cleaned it up I discovered details on it that make me scratch my head. It has ridges around the outer edge that appear to be decorative. The side view shows some stange "layers" to it??? The back is made of lead which is why it is heavy and it has a similar coloring as the bullet that Baldingboy found last week which just leads me to believe it has been in the ground a while.

Do you think Electrolosis might help it or would it damage it even further?

Anyone have ANY idea what I have found???

Re: Something else that won't be IDed

Are you talking about what appears to be a Pocket Watch Inside on
the right in your first Pic ?

Looks to me it might be a hinge on it and it might open to be a cosmetic mirror.would explain the heavy metel behind what would be the mirror .if possible try opening it

Re: Something else that won't be IDed

Was this found in a CW relic area?

Maybe the lead bottom to a Hotchkiss ordnance canister?

Re: Something else that won't be IDed

Yes it was found within 100 yards of a place where HEAVY Civil War Trafic was. There were cannons in this area as it was a strategic area in the city. I don't want to give too much info away as I know there are other people on the forum from my area that might sneak by and dig up some of my junk, I mean relics! ;) :D ;D

It is bigger than a pocket watch would be.

Could be something like a mirrored compact but this thing weighs almost a pound!

Exactly what size is it? 2.9 inches? 3.7 inches? Hmmm... I wonder what size those Hotchkiss canisters were...

All the rust on it make sme think it is ferrous instead of lead. So, ...M ??? onty

Yeah the outer part is iron but the inside is without a doubt lead

Sorry it took so long to get this picture.

Here it is. Do you think electrolysis might help?

I have been cooking it slowly.

A little more detail can be seen. The edge is actually not made up of layers the ridge pattern goes all the way around. There is a lip and then the ridges can be seen.

Also on the face of the item there is a circle that has become visible after about 4 hours of electrolosis.

Thanks for looking

I am cooking it but I only have a 0.8 amp power supply. I am going to try and find a 1 or 2 amp supply tonight.

I am going to cook it good, it will just take me a little time.

Thanks

If there was Civil War arty nearby, it could be part of a punch fuse. IIRC these had a disk where you punched a hole in the surface to set how many seconds it would take to make the shell explode after firing. Just my guess though....

It was found within 100 yards of where several cannons were during the CW. I am going to keep cleaning it slowly and maybe I can get just a little more detail from the thing.
