Hello all,,,
I run into something a little different today. I was hunting the edge of one of the local ball fields and decided to go into the small wooded area that was adjacent to it. There were a few foot paths running threw it, but I was mainly hunting the ground between all the trees when ever possible. I only found a total of 14 cents when I run across an old fence line that had been torn down sometime in the past. Just beyond the fence was a small ravine loaded with pieces of old bottles, jugs, and other various treasures. :)

At this time I set the detector down for the first time ever on a hunt and started looking around. I found a number of older bottles, an old insulator, and a few other small trinkets just laying on the surface. The only piece of metal found worth keeping was what looks like the top of an old copper salt shaker.

Two of my favorites from this haul are pictured below. The first one almost brought me to tears when I saw that it was cracked, and the stem had been broken. It's amber in color, with a flower design etched into it. The second is the old insulator. It's marked, " HEMINGRAY ", with, " No. 9 " on the back. My first nice insulator... Any info an these, or any of the other items would be greatfully appreciated...

This is my first bottle dump since I was a kid, and didn't know any better, and I will definitely be going back to see what all else is there. I only did a quick search of the surface before my hands were full of glass, so I decided to leave it for another day when I'm a little more prepared to carry everything. I can't wait to dig in and really see what all is there. I seen a lot of broken treasure all over the area...

Hope ya all have had some luck, & Happy hunting~

P.S.> I'll update this post after going back for an update...
I'm going to hit this area pretty hard... ;D

Thanks again all for the great info, and comments...
I went back to the site without my detector this time and dug around a bit more. Didn't find anything all that old unless you count the hundreds of small broken pieces that cover an area of about 25' x 50'...
I'm posting a pic a the end of the post showing some of the broken pieces...

Hmm...a bullet (I think it's a bit later than a CW-appears to be a cast roundnose, possible .38 or a bit bigger) and a DOC tag. Maskes me wonder if there's an escaped prisner buried there after being shot. LOL J/K

Nice finds so far, Leon. Keep 'em comin'.

Stoney,,, Is does look to be too new to be from the civil war era. I wasn't sure if it was just the ground conditions, or what. It is about the same diameter as the .58 cal ( 3 ringer I found last year ), but it doesn't look anything like it. I thought maybe I had found a different type from that era. I know nothing about bullets. Do they still make them that big?
Here's a pic to compare it's size to some known bullets..

Yes they do. Lyman has been making bullet molds for many years. Seeing it against the .58 cal. makes me think it may be from a large caliber rifle. The stuff found so far is too old for truely modern rounds. Though it's possible that it's a remade round from a .50 cal rifle. The lack of lead oxidation seems to point that direction.
