Hello all,,,
I run into something a little different today. I was hunting the edge of one of the local ball fields and decided to go into the small wooded area that was adjacent to it. There were a few foot paths running threw it, but I was mainly hunting the ground between all the trees when ever possible. I only found a total of 14 cents when I run across an old fence line that had been torn down sometime in the past. Just beyond the fence was a small ravine loaded with pieces of old bottles, jugs, and other various treasures. :)

At this time I set the detector down for the first time ever on a hunt and started looking around. I found a number of older bottles, an old insulator, and a few other small trinkets just laying on the surface. The only piece of metal found worth keeping was what looks like the top of an old copper salt shaker.

Two of my favorites from this haul are pictured below. The first one almost brought me to tears when I saw that it was cracked, and the stem had been broken. It's amber in color, with a flower design etched into it. The second is the old insulator. It's marked, " HEMINGRAY ", with, " No. 9 " on the back. My first nice insulator... Any info an these, or any of the other items would be greatfully appreciated...

This is my first bottle dump since I was a kid, and didn't know any better, and I will definitely be going back to see what all else is there. I only did a quick search of the surface before my hands were full of glass, so I decided to leave it for another day when I'm a little more prepared to carry everything. I can't wait to dig in and really see what all is there. I seen a lot of broken treasure all over the area...

Hope ya all have had some luck, & Happy hunting~

P.S.> I'll update this post after going back for an update...
I'm going to hit this area pretty hard... ;D

Hey Leon,
Treasure is where you find it.
Way to Go!

Re: Something a little different, for Leon...

Nice!

Love that little bottle with flower. Like the style you took the pics, exact place where you have found the treasure is always lovely to see. And my favorite places to hunt are woods.

keep it up.

Good post! I've found these before myself. These little "trash" areas long forgotten can be real winners.

Cool! What an unexpected surprise that must of been. You are so lucky.
The finds you were able to carry out are awesome.I can only imagine what else is there yet to be unearthed. There's bound to be many metal relics also.
Have a safe and rewarding dig. HH!

Leon,

very nice finds.

Love those insulators, getting harder and
harder to find them today.

have a good un..............

Re: Something a little different, for Leon...

What an exciting spot you've got there, Leon!

Those surface finds look like they date from the late 1920s to the early 1930s. A little digging might turn up some even older pieces!

Good luck out there!

Re: Something a little different, for Leon...

Wow Leon,You did good. I would love to find a bottle dump. I am sure there are lots more to find. :)

Re: Something a little different, for Leon...

Leon, looks like a winning site to me. 8) Definitely time for a sifter of some kind, a shovel, a hard tined rake, and be sure to take an extra pair of gloves. ;) Take your time and keep us updated. HH!

Re: Something a little different, for Leon...

The other bottle next to the insulator appears to be a perfume bottle. There may be a glass stopper in there somewhere that will fit it and it's possible that the base is there also. I can just about guarantee that there's other goodies in there as well. You might even find a few marbles as well. Good Luck!

Thanks all, & Thanks for the link PBK...
I was able to get back to the site for about an hour yesterday. I still haven't actually dug into to this site any. I found a few more older bottle, and a few that probably isn't all that old, but they had some nice designs, so I grabbed them too... The large brown bottle says, "PUREX" and appears to have been in a fire. Also another bigmouth bottle, and few other goodies...

How did you know I would find a marble Stoney? ;D
I dug around the bottle dump for awhile then decided to detect some of the area. The hunting was hard pushing through the bushes and all of the scrap metal in the area, but I did manage to find my second ever " 3 Ringer ". Not sure if this one is from the civil war era, or not. Looks like it could be from the design. Also found probably my oldest marble from the looks of it, and a tag of some kind with a date of "1964 / Indiana / 49 38415". Looks to maybe have the letter "DOC" below that also, Department of Corrections? lol...

This site has been some fun hunting and I am definitely going back for more. The area is almost like stepping back in time...
Good luck all, & Happy hunting~

Leon..
WTG Very nice bottle dump find you have there. Hope you find some great discarded gold and silver in there too!!

Dave

Aren't old dumps like that great.. My rule of thumb for old bottles is if it has a screwcap toss it though.. to each there own and there are exceptions to every rule but in general it's a safe practice. If it's a surface dump you might find older bottles in one area vs another and if it's a regular dump you'll have to dig, the farther down the older the bottles and stuff. by the way, I find a lot of marbles digging dumps! I have a mason jar about half full from doing this.. some are worth money. Have to watch out for smaller stuff too, I found an 1898 Indian Head penny digging a dump, just luck that I seen it because I wasn't sifting, I've heard of people finding other coins too.. heard one guy found a twenty dollar gold piece (but that was in an old privy)

Hmm...a bullet (I think it's a bit later than a CW-appears to be a cast roundnose, possible .38 or a bit bigger) and a DOC tag. Maskes me wonder if there's an escaped prisner buried there after being shot. LOL J/K

Nice finds so far, Leon. Keep 'em comin'.

Awesome Leon!! :o Love them old bottles! And the marble! And the tag! And the bullet of course! ;D

Looks like you found a great spot! Gonna keep you busy for a while!

Nana ;)

those are some nice finds. the bottle next to the insulator looks to be a perfume bottle. the deeper you dig down you should find the older stuff, you might find some buttons mixed in there as well. good luck and hh
