Hey guys, we’ve had some more luck recently. Backtracking a bit to several days ago, we met Dan at a park that we’ve never tried before. It’s pretty large and we only wandered through certain parts of it. I found the only silver, and I hesitate to consider it a tangible find because it was near the road and just below the surface in this extremely thick, red clay. It looked like some construction work brought the coin up or something. I also got two tags that have the name "J. Holsan" on them.

But anyway, Saturday was a surprising day. Me and Mirage went to one of our usual detecting grounds (one that Dan had discovered a while ago), although we haven’t been there since sometime in the summer of last year. We wandered into a rather small patch of land that we had never tried detecting before because it was sort of away from the main area. There was plenty of clad and a wheat would pop up here and there. After a while I got the sterling Catholic item which was pretty cool. I kept wandering around in the area and got a sweet VDI of 87 and 88, pinpointing at 6.5". I called over to Mirage and told him about the signal, and then proceeded to dig. I flipped the plug over, and here's what I saw:

That's a walking half sticking out of the plug...and what little of the coin that showed through the dirt was just enough to see the date of 1943 on it too. Talk about a surprise...here it is pried out of the clump:

So I figured why wouldn't there be a silver dime around? It didn't take too long...a 1954 rosie turned up. Not too long after, we had enough of digging through that crazy thick grass and all...I still have sore spots on my hands from cutting and digging. I'll bet there's more though in that little area.

I thought that the 1969 Canadian quarter had some silver in it, especially since it wasn’t all dark or red and appeared to have been an inch below the surface (but it might’ve been hidden in the grass), but I guess 1968 was the last year.

Also a bracelet, with different ways of saying "peace" i guess:

DUDE, you like draggin' around a back hoe or WHAT ? ? ? :-)

If that be a half in the plug, plug must be like three feet across!

Hey, no worries, whatever it takes...I'm a big fan of monster holes, don't damage coins that way. Rock on!

that is a massive plug.....i need to do that.....no dinging coins!

lol...oh it's not THAT big...and anyway A) the part of the coin you see is hardly enough to contain the date and the foot, B) I want to make sure I get the coins in one plug cause it's a real pain to dig in that grass, and C) I was predicting silver in the hole and didn't want to gash it or something. Thanks yall

The two matching brass pieces with the name are from trunks, or other luggage of some sort. I found something very similar, along with a larger brass placard with the full name. It was in a road, in an 1880s or 1890s context.

Although the details are hard to see, the smaller two pieces bear matching initials, and the larger piece has a different name, along with the state. They were found together in the same hole, and I believe are from luggage and the result of some catastrophe.

Thanks for the info plehbah, I was figuring they were some sort of ID tags for luggage or whatnot but I wasn't sure about that...or the age. Interesting...

Nice finds! I'd dig a big plug, too, especially given the information you had to work with: great signal and deep. The deeper the signal, the bigger plug circumference. The grass will heal.

Nice Finds, Nate, Looks like you all had a GReat Day!!

Nate the Great!!! :icon_king: Congrats on the awesome finds. That Walker and religious medal are super.
I don't blame you for digging a large plug whenever you can, it sure beats ruining a nice find. I use a small shovel myself.
I won't ask how Bob did, because I know we'll be seeing something posted by him soon enough.
Have you painted the flames on your new vehicle yet? :o
Congrats Nate,
Doug

Nice Walker Half! :thumbsup:That's the way to dig plugs, big, keep the roots intact, leave 'em heavy, then the mowers won't suck them up a week later.

Big plugs...I'm with you...I dinged a nearly mint 8 reale early in my detecting career and have been digging big plugs ever since!

Nice finds and a great post. The walker half is on my list for this year. Everyone should know when you have a 50 cent signal you dig a big plug not to damage the coin. Also cut your plugs down don't angle them in. You should cut half circles or like a horse shoe and peel it back so some roots stay intact and alive. This way you don't get a dry dead spot.

Keep @ it and HH!!

Congrats on a great hunt..those are AWESOME finds!

Yep. I remember when you found that coin too. That thing was SWEET, ding or not. Thanks for the comments all.
