Hi all,

I've gone to some other countries and I would always purchase coins from roadside vendors. You have to be careful, you can get ripped off. However, I think these two are real coins of some kind, I just have no idea what they are. I purchased them in India.

I blew up the pictures a little bit, the smaller coin is about the size of a nickel, but the width of a penny, the larger coin is about the size of a Kennedy Half, but a little thinner.

Thanks for any help.

I can't read the first coin...

The second one is a copper/nickel 20 Rials from Iran (Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi)

Muhammad Ri·za (or Re·za) , 1919–80, shah of Iran 1941–79; in exile after 1979 (son of Riza Shah Pahlavi). The date range of your coin would probably have been limited to his time in office (1941-1979).

The date, 1354, if not a typo, might refer to the Islamic calendar year, that would equate to about 1935 in our (Gregorian) calendar. Perhaps the variety of this coin was then issued between 1935 and 1979; just guessing.

I recognize the (barely discernable) coin as from the Ottoman Empire. The image on the left is a 'tugra'. A tugra (or tughra) is an outstanding calligraphic imperial design, monogram or a kind of signature of the Ottoman Sultans. It bears the names of the sultan and his father and the prayer “ever victorious” in most of them. There were 36 Ottoman Sultans but only 35 sultan tugras. The tugras were used on various places and objects throughout Ottoman Empire.

This site (http://www.tugra.org/en/tugralar.asp) has pics of the 35 different tugras. Find 'your' Sultan's tugra then seek out his coinage and you'll have your answer.

The tugra is actually a representation of a former sultan's signature; after sticking a couple of fingers in an ink well then signing his "X" with a flurry; it's quite famous.

Not a typo... I found this info on the Krause book, I guess. I may have used a poor description when I wrote "date range". But it was 1354 for sure.

muslims use a differant date system that christians do :tard: leading to much confusion --christains use the death of christ --muslim the death of mohammad * it causes about a 580 year differance at the start year of the muslim calander year 0 --between the two also the length of a year differs as well / thus the 1354 in muslim times means 1970 ish by christian time frame

The 20 rials coin is catalogued as coin KM 1181. The date of the coin is SH 1354/AD 1975. SH 1354 is the same as AD 1975.

Here's another site that shows the sameness of the dates:
http://www.jbjcoins.dk/Map 11/Pahlavi/the_pahlavis.htm

# KM refers to coins listed in the 24th, 1997 Krause/Mishler Standard Catalog of World Coins 1344 pp ed Colin R Bruce II, and to subsequent lists in the monthly World Coin News, both published by Krause Publications Iola Wisconsin 54990-0001 USA.
