Hottest day of the summer...felt like. I guess if you're gonna dig 25 pennies at least if they are Indian Heads it's alright.

Coins
20 IH
5 wheat
2 buffalo nickels
2 shield nickels
1 liberty nickel
2 2 cent pieces... 1864 :hello2: and 1865 (first of these for me)
3 merc dimes
3 barber dimes
1 unk

...and the buttons, (12) most civilian with a few back marks I have not tackled yet... and the prize Artillery button (any thoughts on the star backmark?)... rimfire casings, lillte shoe (?) buckle, a few musket balls, pocket watch and what I rekon is a chunk of mortor or cannonball... 9.6 lbs... and not to mention the proverbial poop load of trash.... but I had all day to look and all night to sort through it and drink big Fosters Lagers (my peeps out of town).

Good times.

Incredible hunt! The most IH's I ever found in one place was 13, but it took more than one hunt! That's not to mention all the other keepers! Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Parsonwalker, because I only rarely look at the "Today's Finds" forum, the best way to get my opinion on an artifact is to post it in the "What-Is-It?" forum here on TreasureNet.

I need a PRECISE measurement (in tenths-of-an-inch) of the "shellwall thickness" of that cannonball fragment to be sure of its caliber. (For example, a 9"-caliber roundshell's wall thickness is 1.7-inches.) Without the precise measurement, all I can do is make a best-guess based on comparing that shell fragment's thickness with the human foot in the photo. Most adult male feet are between 3.5 and 4.5-inches wide at the widest part. Based on that, the frag seems to be from either a 13" Mortarball or a 15" cannonball. The Confederates didn't have any roundshells that big, so the frag has to be a yankee one.

About the 1-piece brass eagle-A button:
The button-backmark book doesn't list any yankee Military buttons with nothing but a single star as the backmark. All I can tell you is that I cannot find an EXACT match for it in the Albert buttonbook. But that might be because it is a cuff-size button -- unfortunately, Chitlin did not give us a size measurement for it. It MIGHT be Tice's button AY199D2, which is a cuff-size button.

It is a brass 1-piece button, and its front shows a "slightly twisted" (not symmetrical) eagle and a "slightly twisted" shield, with a RAISED (not impressed) letter A on the twisted shield. That SPECIFIC version of 1-piece brass eagle-A button dates from March 1821 (when eagle-A buttons first appear) to 1827. The closest match I've been able to find for it in the Albert button-book is button AY-63 (coat-size) and Tice button AY199D2 (cuff size). If Chitlin eventually tells us it is cuff-size, it is Tice's AY199D2.

2nd helpings, a few hours between rain showers...coins are all pretty messed up.
8 IH
5 wheats
3 liberty nickels
the flying eagle cent with a hole in the middle of it.... don't think I'm gonna get a date
another watch (swiss)
a nice looking coat button (really thought I had a good military one when it came up)
and a smattering of other what nots.. (a weird hammer/key I'm gonna put in the what's it forum)

Thanks for the info on the Artillery button... it is 15 mm (speaking in tenths) to be exact and has 4 stars visible after a little more rubbin... btw, I asked for the Tice book for Christmas last year and didn't get it... maybe this year.

The chunk... best I can do speaking in inches is in eights (just a dumb southern boy :icon_scratch:)... thickest towards the center looks to be around 2 3/8".... towards the outer edge it's more like 2 2/8" and maybe just shy of that on the bitter edge. Hope that helps. :icon_thumleft:

So this spot still isn't done..... after getting run off by lightning that day (posted in metal detecting forum) I went back just cause I could..again on my way to the grocery, quick look and out pops this 1772 Carolus III...not sure how or why I missed it before...thing about hunting trashy, buggy spots I guess......

Running tally from here besides the relics
35 indianheads
12 wheats
1 flying eagle
2 2 cent shield
3 shield nickels
4 liberty nickels
2 buffalo nickels
3 barber dimes
3 merc dimes
1 large cent (toast)
3 reales

29 buttons (only 2 military)....

anytime any thing older than the 1800's comes out the ground it's a moment.....
