Hi All,
They are starting those yard sales earlier and earlier,
I've seen some starting thursdays :dontknow:
Well, I stopped at one early yesterday morning.
I got 5 pieces of sterling flatware from a bin of mixed pieces, $1 each
I have some questions on the two souvenier spoons.
First piece says 'waterloo' has 6-18-1815 in roman numerals across the top.
(battle of waterloo date)
it's the hallmarks that have me stumped
Shows an 835 quality mark (upsidedown), HH in Oval, Lion passant, with roman 2 or some symbol between his legs, left facing bust with 'M' on cap, and a 'C' or something
in the lst oval.
Same with the 'Inverness 1890' spoon. the date is when the town of Inverness Florida was incorporated, so that's where it's from, but the hallmarks are European.
I know the anchor means Birmingham manufacture, but the rest are unknown to me.
lastly the engraved butterknife, I believe this is an oldie.
Again, an anchor, but the other images have me confused.
The other two pieces I got were easier to ID.
Would be very pleased to get dates and any other info on these!
Thanks for looking! ;D
HH to all!

Okay;
Your dated spoon with the 1890 on it,

It was made in Birmingham in 1888

Working on the others... Dial up mean slow loading of the pictures.

Cheers

Thanks Mr Roberts,
The compny that engraved it must order blank spoons in advance for their orders,
how interesting
I appreciate the research! HH to you

The waterloo spoon.

That is pretty obvious in terms of purity...835 as you have deduced. Possibly made in France... and I have no books on French hallmarks.

the butter knife is a little more difficult... I am not convinced that the anchor showing is Birmingham.... it looks to be more akin to a Chester hallmark. Unfortunately, the rest of the hallmarks are too worn to give you more; Not well enough defined to give a date.

Sorry... that is the best that I can do.

Cheers

The 835 looks like a post-1942 Belgian mark.

Now about that knife :icon_scratch:

The anchor is wrong for a UK hallmark of Birmingham, note there are no cut off corners, the rest looks dodgey as well.

Thanks Crusader,
Likely from another country :icon_scratch:
Here's some more pix, as it is broken, probably not valuable.
Certainly more than the dollar I bought it for :D
HH All!

Thank you,
Am browseing silvercollection.it searching for these marks.
I think the 2nd photo is correctly oriented, showing a bird, anchor & bust.
I appreciate your efforts

:hello:

Your first spoon depicting Lion Walking right, this hallmark was only used by the company Gorham, The origins of Gorham are in 1831 when the firm of Jabez Gorham was joined by Henry L. Webster in the Gorham & Webster.
The company moved into a new headquarters in Providence, RI in 1890 as employment surpassed 500, and in 1905 they opened a retail outlet on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Throughout the latter half of the 19th century and into the 20th, Gorham attracted some of the best designers and silver artisans in the world. Today, Gorham silver is perhaps best known for its silverware which it produces in hundreds of well known pattens including Chantilly (the best selling flatware pattern in the world), Strasbourg, Melrose, Fairfax, and Buttercup (see Gorham Flatware
If that's a letter C on the spoon the date will be 1870

Thanks SS,
There are over 1000 pages on the website I mentioned,
I am most pleased with this info ;D
An 1870 souvenier from an 1815 battle. :hello2:
I really am amazed at the items you can find for sale, whose importance or value aren't known or appreciated. (sometimes at 'dealers' too :icon_scratch: ).
There's a small 'buy sell trade' shop near me where you can buy 'silver' that isn't,
and 'junk' that's silver, a little knowledge goes a long way.
HH

I'm gonna green check this, I got my dates & ID's on two pieces. Thanks All :hello:
I now know the other piece is a 'Fish knife'
Some knife history:
"In England during the early 18th century, knives have begun to be fashioned with wide, almost spoon-shaped (though still flat) tips, the better to use them for conveying food to the mouth.
By the beginning of the 19th Century, knives began to lose their curved, bulbous curved tips."
HH All
