I apologize if this is getting confusing - but all I can say is "join the club." Meaning ... I took a drafting class in the 8th grade, but I guess I didn't pay too much attention. Perhaps someone can explain to me why this ...

" Metric - .032 stainless steel pipe diameter gauge "

... has a similar scale progression - 20 - 24 - 28 - etc - as the item in question?

I realize the gauge is in 1/32s - but why the similar progression? :icon_scratch:

(Is it basically saying this one is 20/32nds and mojjax's is 20/64ths ? )

[ And how does the "metric" aspect apply? ]

Here's the link: http://www.imprintitems.com/custom/6984653

Hi , I like the "Pocket size give-away tool for Measuring Seeds." idea SBB & that gauge Taz found is quite interesting . Thanks for all the help , I've been searching Patents without much luck .

Bob ,I see no millimeters on the pipe gauge in your last post. Its not metric.

40/64 is the same as 20/32 witch is the same as 5/8.

As for the similar scale, they are every other even number just different denominator.
Just an inch broke into different sizes.

Here is a caculator for reducing fractions type in 40 and 64 hit enter , then try it with 20 and 32 and you will see what i mean, they both =5/8.

I was joking earlier about having to go to the tool box ten times just to find the right bolt. I'm actually pretty good with tools and such, and can measure and cut the prettiest straight edge with a Skil saw that you ever saw (no pun intended). I'm just a little slow when it comes to doing actual math in my head. I understand now that the pipe gauge I just posted is not metric. But what I don't understand is why the website where it can be ordered says that it 'is' metric? :icon_scratch:

But let's forget about the whole metric business for the moment, and even forget about 32nds vs 64ths. And instead focus on the similarily progressive numbers which appear on both Mojjax's gauge and the pipe gauge that I just posted. Those numbers being 24 - 28 - 32 - etc. With my new question being this ...

(see my post #27 where it shows both the chart from the catalog and Mojjax's gauge).

Since most (and possibly all) of these various types of gauges have similar progressions on them (24-28-32-etc.) does this mean that the numbers on Mojjax's gauge and the numbers on the chart match perfectly, or is it just coincidence?

In other words ...

Are we 1,000% sure Mojjax's gauge is for measuring seed screens?

or ...

Is it possible that Mojjax's gauge is for measuring inside pipe diameters?

If I had to vote on this, I'd say ... "Screen Gauge"

However ...

At this juncture I cannot "prove" it 1,000%!

:dontknow: Can anyone? :dontknow:

Hey Mojjax ~

Good to see you again. Maybe it's time to throw in the towel and contact the company.

What say you?

I will even do it for you if you want. Just say the word and consider it done.

I wanted to let you know I checked and found contact information for the A.T. Ferrell Company. However, none of the e-mail contacts I found are such that a picture can be sent. But they do have a fax number where pictures can be sent. I have a fax machine and can easily send them a picture. In fact, I have a document already prepared and ready to send. So unless I hear from you asking me not to send it, I will go ahead and do it. I will wait until 3:PM eastern time / Noon Pacific. Which is three hours from now. If I don't hear from you by then I will go ahead and send it, and then report back here just as soon as I receive a reply from them. I'm confident that someone on their staff will recognize your gauge and be able to tell us "exactly" what it was used for. And with today being Saturday, we likely won't hear from them until next week.

In the meantime, perhaps some of you would like to enter your vote ...

1. Seed Screen Gauge?
2. Pipe Diameter Gauge?
3. Both?
4. Some Other Type of Gauge? (Specify).

And why does it have a hole in it?

1. Because it was originally part of a "set" of gauges?
2. To hang it on a nail or hook in the barn?

Thanks

The numbers are 64ths. 40/64=5/8 ,48/64=3/4.

Round hole screens are often designated by a single number such as 10. This means the screen is 10/64ths of an inch in diameter.

I would guess its for measuring screens in air screen cleaners for seeds.
Is this thread still going? I thought it was solved by SBB, Charlie, Gypsy and creskol in reply#19. (seed screen gauge in 1/64ths) :icon_scratch: The additional research supplied by SBB seems to support it. :read2:

I know nothing about farming. My apologies. Reading back, I guess the exact use has not been determined. Keep searching.

Thanks. Both the fax and e-mail have been sent. Here's what I sent - minus my personal contact information. I will let you know just as soon as I receive a reply. (I got a receipt on the fax indicating it went through "OK" ) :icon_thumright:

[ e-mail message here ] [ fax below ]

Hi ~

Note: Along with this e-mail I am also sending a fax to 206-824-5463 with a picture of the item in question.

I found an item recently that has your company name on it. It appears to be old and possibly a measuring gauge of some type. My best guess is either a "seed screen gauge" or a "pipe inside diameter gauge." I was hoping someone in your company would recognize it and tell me exactly what it was used for, and how old it might be?

It is made of thin metal which appears to be brass. It measures appx. 6" inches long. It has incriment numbers on it like 22 - 24 - 28 - etc.

Anything you can tell me about the item would be very much appreciated.

I can provide additional pictures at your request.

Thank you in advance for your time and interest.

Thanks. The more the merrier. One clue leads to another.

And while we're waiting to hear from the janitor again, I thought I'd throw my own monkey wrench into the mix. (As if I haven't already).

This time we have what is described as ...

Antique seed "Graders"

They display metric measurements - but it didn't say if they were American or foreign. :dontknow:

The main thing here is I finally found some seed screens with the sizes marked on them.

DRUM ROLLLLLLLLLLLLL ... :hello2:

Mojjax ~

I just heard back from a represenative with the A.T. Ferrell Company Inc.

He said your item is a ...

"Clipper Screen Guage"

But what he didn't say was how old yours is. I sent him a follow up asking him that, but have not heard back from him yet. I will let you know if/when I do. He sent me the picture below, which is from their current listing (catalog) indicating the screen gauges are still being made and can be purchased for $6.00. The text is his e-mail message with contact information. I already went to their website, but could not find where it showed anything about the guage.

Notice on the "new" one below where it has their phone number and web link. This is the best I could do with the pdf image. But at least we know now and can "confirm" that it is "definitely" a "CLIPPER SCREEN GUAGE" But why specifically "Clipper" and not related to other models of seed cleaning machines, I don't know. And I really don't want to bug the guy again. I think I will be doing good if he takes the time and answers my question about how old yours might be.

Anyhoo ... That's that! Here's his e-mail text ...

(I also learned how to correctly spell "Guage" )

{ I think ? }

I just heard back from the A.T. Ferrell guy. Regarding my question on how old your guage might be, his exact words were ...

"No way to tell"

I hope he doesn't read this, but I have to believe there 'is' a way to tell. But maybe he's just too busy to look into it. Anyway, I'm happy with what he did send. At least he responded to my inquiry, which a lot of companies won't bother with these days.

P.S. ~

It is spelled "Gauge" and not "Guage" as their catalog has it. Do you think I should e-mail the guy and inform him about the misspelling? No way, Jose! I don't want him to think I'm some kind of a jerk. Lol :tongue3:
