Went out with LowBatts and Lookin4Seated today and we checked out a new section of the woods we hunted last week.
After trekking which seemed like forever we finally got to the site, which was a field, and got to swinging. The field was really muddy and in some spots standing water, so eventually we worked our way into the woods just behind it. After about 30 minutes I had 3 wheaties which were all a few feet apart. Made my way around a few other parts but something about the area the wheaties came from made me go back. Another hour or so yielded 3 more wheaties. Seated came over and I told him what I had found and he started checking the area too. There had to be silver there. Seated pulled a few wheats out of the area and then had to leave. I stuck around the area. I was on a mission!!

Another hour or so combing the area brought me 2 more wheaties and then it happened. I dug a 1917D Mercury Dime! Surprised the $%&! out of me went it popped out of the side of the hole as I was pinpointing and scrapping away at the sides with my hand. My heart almost stopped for a minute!! Mission accomplished. ;D

As well as the wheaties and the Merc, I also found a silver plated spoon, a pocket knife, rabies vaccination tag, and an old lock. Didn't take pictures of everything, but here are the pictures I did.

For a 17, it's in pretty decent shape! Here's to you finding more :occasion14:

Re: Some Say It Would Happen...........

That's a great dime! A year older and you would have dug the Holy Grail of dimes.
Beautiful patina on the lock, nice!

A most excellent hunt  and congrats on that first silver!

Your lock and vaccination tag wonderful finds as well  (I like the lock a lot ;D)

All right!!!! ;D Nice digs, Dan!!

A big CONGRATS on your first silver!!!   :icon_king:

Mercs are a favorite of mine - I've never met a Merc who wasn't gorgeous!

Nice job on the lock and tag, too!

I am so happy you finally cracked that first. Persistence pays off! Many more will come now!

Congrtats man! I knew there had to be silver there with all thoses wheaties coming out. I wish I could've been able to stay longer to see your face when that silver popped out. Next time. Now you know what they sound like, so they should be sticking to your coil. Congrats.

I called Jon on my way home and that's what he told me. I am not really into Relics but the lock is really cool. The hinge is free and I've got the internals lubricated up. If I can get the lock to work, I plan on using for my treasure chest. Just need to find a cool treasure chest for the lock to compliment.

Thanks everyone for the Congrats and compliments. So, when is the next hunt!!!

Oh, does anyone have any idea if the 71 on the vaccination tag is the year? There is a 1 on the opposite side if you can't tell form the picture.

Thanks. I did a google web and image search and came up with nothing. Didn't think to check ebay. So it looks like the tag is from 1971. I think mine looks better. Has that aged look to it.

so close to unreal -- 1 year earlier the 1916 D is a "motherlode" coin --- great find still

Awesome job bud!!!!! Now go get some more!!!!

HI HO SILVER !!!!!

WTG Dan...

The monkey is off. Whats the next goal.... Seated? or a Silver Quarter?

Nice looking lock...

Awesome work Dan!
I've still on mission to locate the site of the actual houses out there, one of these days! Wprked my way back toward that area and gave you guys a few shout outs when I had to leave, but the area is large and I'm not sure I was in earshot. Got a couple more relics myself (read Rusty Iron Objects) and met up with Jon on his way out.

Having been out there a couple times, I'm surprised there's any hotspots with that concentration but not surprised by the type and age. You got it right, find that hotspot and kill it! And yeah, that lock rules! Great hunting! The woods out there will be overgrown and buggy next week, but the ridgeline and some of those wooded areas will have clearings if you want to hit them.

Also on the way out I noticed a couple newly clearcut areas that may hold RIO's. I'll probably head back out there, still looking for that one or two remote digs that make one's day.

Thanks again everyone.

@LowBatts - I can do this Sunday again. On my way out I checked just North of the first place we hunted the weekend before. Found where the road bed picks back up past the small pond. I also checked out the first spot we hunted all the way up to 72 and walked around the whole lot. Then when I got home, I checked the arials from 1938 to present and see that just to the east of the that spot there was another house/barn(some type of building). I guess it would be just south of where you, me, and Trash hunted the ridgeline on our way out. There is still the Price place too.

I also found the hunting lodge on the 50's or 60's arial can't remember. There looks like a couple open paths that lead down the hill to the water. Might be worth finding those and checking them out. I am going to get a GPS soon. I have a few ideas on how it would make finding some of these locations easier....

Did you check out the wooded area on the 10 acre parcel? Pretty surreal with all the rows of trees. Would look awesome at first light with some fog rolling through.

RIO's? Need help on that one.

Dan, congrats on your first silver! And what a beauty she is!! Great Merc! I don't believe I even have one that old myself, not that I've found too many of them either, heh.

Yup. I usually go by Dano online but that was already taken here. One of the guys I worked with always called me D-Dub so I used that instead.
