along with the 5 reales that I found in 2004 there was:
1854 Seated Quarter
1889 seated Dime
1807 Draped Bust Copper
Nova Constellatio (1783-1786) no date
Eagle buttons
Tobacco clay pipe token (circa 1700's)
Jeff,
well some folks in England think it's a button and someone over the Big Pond wants to buy it. As near as I can tell, back in Colonial days there where tobacco shops who would create their own tokens and give them as change. They could be used at that shop only in future. This was popular in Europe - esp. England and in Germany. The symbols on the front were like a coat of arms for that shop/seller.
I believe this is an extremely "rare" token or button from that period. It could have been from a shop in Phila. or from England. As far as I know it is not in any of the books which proves to me it was from a very small private circulation. Perhaps it is in some book from England but I have been unable to find it to date.
If it is a button - then it was custom made for someone in the tobacco business
and for all I know worth even more to collectors.
It could be worth far more than I suspect and therefore I won't sell it at this time.
If I found out it was worth $100,000 or more - than yeah I'd sell it! *L*
What i need now is the provenance on this 5 clay pipe token that I found.
There's one thing for sure - I've not seen another anywhere!
And you are are absolutely correct - this is the rarest find that I have ever made to date.
HH!
