Hi all... I hit up some sidewalk tear up and came up with thi stoken. Hoep the scan show you well enough, why does a luck token have a swastika on it?

Also has heart & key, four leaf clover, elephant, horse shoe, sea shell I think and a wish bone. It reads "The all seeing eye" and says below that "guards you from evil". The flip side has some dude in a turbin I guess viewing a looking glass showing the swastika again in his glass ball. That side reads "Good luck wil accompany the bearer".

How old is it? What's it from? ???

The swastika was a symbol of good luck before world war two. Many tokens that I have found have swastikas on them including BOY SCOUT tokens. If it has a swasticka you can bet it dates before 1945!

Oh man. I've seen one of those before but I can't remember where. It may have even been on this site. If I remember, I'll post again but my memory fails me right now.

Swastikas were Hindu good luck symbols till they were hijacked by the Nazi in the early 30s.

Heres one on E-bay. it doesn't really give any info about it but it's currently bid a $2.25.

The Original Meaning

The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.

Cool stuff!

Thanks guys!

Very cool find. 8)
If i find objects with swastikas here in Norway- they are all leftovers from the war.
I had a lot of german weapons some years back, and even they had little eagles with swastikas :D

It could not have worked for the original person, he lost it ;D

God bless
Peter

Those coins must realy be lucky.....LOL
Ask the guy who LOST it and is now probably deceased...what luck.
Still a very nice find though

Hey Evolution, funny how you have the "all seeing eye" in your avatar. :D

token_chicago_swas.jpg

This one is from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.
It is brass and about 32mm in diameter.
I think I got it from some coin dealer's "junk bin" in the 1960's.

I find any object with the swastika fascinating even more so when dug up, but the Nazi swastika was right facing where as left-facing swastika can be found in both Hindu and Buddhist tradition and is the acceptable modern usage after being hijacked by Hitler

in Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler wrote:
“I myself, meanwhile, after innumerable attempts, had laid down a final form; a flag with a red background, a white disk, and a black swastika in the middle. After long trials I also found a definite proportion between the size of the flag and the size of the white disk, as well as the shape and thickness of the swastika”

those side walk tear ups turns out to be good hunting.

I was thinking the same thing. From what I understand Vermont put that image on the back of the coin for a reason. There are 13 rays surrounding the eye. They represent the 13 original colonies. The eye represents the fact that Vermont had its "EYE" on becoming the 14th colony. Pretty cool history when you think about it. I feel very fortunate to have found such a good example of the coin. I believe the Nova Constellatio coppers have the same design on them. Here's a close-up pic for you.

The Buddhists still use the swastika in their imagery very much. It was also used by some tribal natives (I have even seen the Native Americans use this symbol) as a symbol for the sun disk. The Native American (Sioux) symbol for Wakan Tonka (Spirit-Great) is almost identical to the swastika except that the arms coming from the central cross shape are more rounded rather than being straight projections.

Just a little info and my 2 cents.
