This isn't anything valuable, but I can't figure out what it is. It was found in an old forest preserve. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a plated metal piece that is hollow. In the wide end there is a metal semi-circle that pivots freely. There is a small opening in the other end, and there is something hopelessly rusted on the inside. Then there's the assembly on the top....

I found a couple of wheats in the same area - a 1919 & a 1929

Any ideas?

Likewise DD-777,
I have searched high and low amongst staplers - and now have googley eyes ::) ::):tongue3:

If it is a can opener, why does it have a spring, which has a rod through it, in it's internal bits?

I'm 99% sure it must be a stapler.
(Obviously I'm open to argument - to convince me otherwise)
Mike
ive been thinking. (for a change) and i think it is too short for that type a can opener. It is less than 5 cents long which would only be about 3 1/2 inches long.
I think stapler but what is the top piece for?

Cy - the piece on top would have held the "pad" or push point of the stapler...
I understand, but its offcentered with the metal bracket on one side... :icon_scratch: and its not on the very end like a stapler would be...

The "hinge post" (1) would obviously have been the back of the top where it would have joined the lower parts. That off-center piece has thrown me a bit too - but - as strange of designs as we have today, they had some pretty wacky designs back then too. With my outstanding artwork (2) :D, imagine the piece atop that bracket - it could have been designed that way to provide an almost "cushioned" effect (comfort for the all-day staplist... ;D). I know I've seen very similar designs but like I mentioned earlier - it's been darn near impossible to find a matching pic. and also why I think it could be from some type of old embosser/stamper. Hopefully, this piece won't turn out to be another one of those "metal sprocket thingy with #s"...

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Well, here's a couple more photos. As you can see, the inside dimension of the narrow end is less than 1/4 inch.

I'm going to hit that spot again - it might be not for 10-14 days - to see if I can find any more of it. I don't think I will, but I'll give it a try anyway.

If not, I think I'll plant it in DesPlaines_IL_SilverBob's yard & let him find it! ;D ;D ;D

As much as it resembles a stapler, I think it is too small. The heavy chrome plating would also make me think otherwise. Then the offset top piece doesnt really fit. Its also kinda small for that type of can opener.

The chrome plating makes me think its something that needs to be rust resistant.

I have seen the new pics now and have a better idea of the size ;D
I think it isn't a stapler.
The 'can opener' attachment on top I have figured out, it must be a quick 'hook on/release' attachment tool.
One such 'tool' that came to mind, was a milkshake maker, at the 'Ol Drugstore ;D :tongue3: from days gone by :D

stickin with can opener
Dont you think the handle is a bit too small to hold as a can opener? Its about the width of two pennies. I didnt realize how short this really is. Maybe a ruler would help. I dont think its big enough to be a handle. :icon_scratch:
