I am digging in the woods in East Texas (12 Miles of mostly woods) I am in Franklin County Texas on a private ranch. There was one homestead here in the early 1900's. I was told that there may have been a moonshine operation in a specific area here, but after 6 months of detecting, I see no proof of that. I found an area where I believe I have found a second and even a third homestead, but I can only base that on my findings. I only dig hear in the winter months, then I boot out the renters and go back to Wisconsin!

It is 1/2 of a sash buckle. The other piece would look identical.
Try doing a google search for "Victorian Sash Buckle" and check out some of the images.

Nice find!

The item is one half a ladies fashion buckle from a waist belt, ca. late 19th Century to Turn-of-the-Century. These are sometimes called "butterfly" buckles as I recall, as both halves together somewhat resemble wings of a butterfly. The other half would be a near mirror image of the portion you have here. Your example appears to be stamped brass, with either silver or nickle finish. Some of these buckles are also sterling, and I would not rule that out either. Rather difficult to tell in the photos, if that is base metal, dirt, or tarnish that I'm seeing. Even solid sterling can come out of some ground conditions looking rather dull and dirty.

Thank you CC Hunter, I cleaned up a small area of it and it shined right up, I am pretty sure it is sterling. I left my acid test kit back in WI. so I can't test it until we get home!
