Relic Hunting
Haven't posted in a while as the weather was absolutely horrible over here. From the very early November the winter hit us with a full blow of snow, arctic temperatures and strong winds. I personally have never seen anything similar. I still managed to get out a few times for 1-3 hours hunts often with temperatures being close to 0 Fahrenheit. Got a number of interesting finds, I'll spare you the usual copper coins and just show the cool relics.

Some finds from my favorite period, the Fur Trade.

Late 1600's - 1700's Saincte Reine/St-Christopher pendant.

What I believe to be a partial silver Luckenbooth brooch or Heart and Crown brooch. Didn't manage to ID the silversmith yet.

Here's an example of a similar one I've found online.

My first fire striker with a maker's mark (didn't ID that one neither)

Got 3 of them within a very small area. (It works by striking a flint with it).

Compagnies Franches de la Marine (French button from 1700's) my best example so far.

Also got a few cool colonial relics.

Masonic cufflinks from 1700's

Nice shoe buckle

20191025_203602a.webp20191025_203533a.webp

Half Dime 1856 and a more recent quarter laying a few feet away.

20191129_162628.webp20191129_162648.webp

Heart shaped heel plate. Some associate it with Civil War, not sure.

20191201_171312.webp20191201_171324.webp

William IV Sappers and miners button 1830's

20191215_172120.webp

Civil War button

20191126_224209.webp

A strange lead token with an imprint of 1837 Halfpenny on it.

20191126_224401.webp 20191126_225921.webp

A copper horn I haven't managed to ID

20191126_224148.webp

And a very small copper lock with GR inscription on it (for king George)

20191126_224647.webp20191126_224731.webp

Did find a good amount of coppers, but they were all the usual George III and early Canadian tokens.

The season is officially over, too bad for the lost fall but I can't really complain as this year we've had the longest spring I've ever seen. I guess it compensates for the lost time.

Thanks for the comments.

some heart heels can be CW...They are from the period..so are diamond, club and spade ones - we find them all over New England around cellar holes and farm fields
heels were made of stacked leather or wood and wore quickly - plates were made for shoes and boots for all walks of life - pun intended - to give heels longer life
yes some soldiers wore boots with them but so did many others

...I still save them - they are 1800s relics
OH! WTG on all your old finds

Those are great year end finds.
You got two finds with makers marks, which is a bonus.
Fur trade silver and the fire strikers are my favourites of the bunch.

Yes, anything with maker's mark is always nice to find. Them being both pretty early items is a huge bonus.

Thanks for the comment and some interesting info. I'll be keeping this one as well, a pretty unusual find for where I'm hunting.

Wow so many great finds there! Congrats on it all! Those masonic cufflinks are really cool! Those fire strikers are really cool. I've never found one and until I saw this post I would probably never know what they were if I do. If you get bored show us the coppers... It's always fascinating to see how good your copper coins come out of the ground!

Thanks xcopperstax. I'll try to take pics during the winter and show them. Those strikers are probably not the first ones for me, I bet I left many of them in the field not knowing what they were.

Those are all beautiful finds! And the way you have everything cleaned is amazing! Any "Brother" would be thrilled to wear those cuff links and to have them both is awesome. Congrats!

Thanks Bodkin.

Great finds Aureus! Your couple of hunts makes my summer of NE Ohio detecting pale in comparison... I would happily show off any old coppers. :)

Very nice finds. Sorry to hear that global warming has shut down your detecting season. Anyway, hope you do even better in 2020.

Yeah, global warming is also going to end the season in NE Ohio pretty soon... you know the ground is freezing cause its so hot over here. :laughing7:

Thanks Noah_D. I'll try to take some time and make the pics of those coppers. Getting a bit lazy this time of year...

GREAT HUNT! Lots of white stuff and your still going..........NICE!!!! :icon_thumright:

LOL.... Global Warming Is on its way.... We should have some changes in a few 100,000 years. I remember in the 1960s we were lead to believe, (again by the politicians) that we were headed for an Ice Age... Come 50 years the new spin is (We are heading for a Global Warming) another narrative that fits the new spin.
Off topic ... Sorry

Thanks basque-man. That's not much snow, we can get up to 4 feet of it in the woods. Than it will be hard to dig :laughing7:

There's definitely a variation of the climate at this moment. Human related or not that's an other debate.
