Here's the thing...it has become evident that there are some individuals out there who, due to their greedy and pathetic nature, like to spoil it for us responsible, fun-loving detectorists by getting people who have nothing to do with the hobby involved. I just read Makton's post, but I assure you this is not the first time this has happened. Exaggerated reports of "50" people being chased out of the woods by cops with bullhorns does nothing but hurt this hobby. No one I hunt with has ever exhibited disrespect to the environment or its denizens. Ethics are a top priority, and we just want to have fun.

From now on, we should keep future posted hunts, either solo or social, to private messages. If desired, also keep the location/s secret when posting finds, following the hunt. I guess this is what we're resorting to doing because of a few bad apples in the hobby.

What do you guys say??

Joe

Nick,

Hey, I'd don't think we've formally met. I've always enjoyed reading your posts. You've got some great potential over there for oldies. I was in Alton/St. Louis this summer, if I head back there again sometime, we should get together and do a hunt somewhere!

I for one will continue posting as I do. I'm just going to be a bit more careful with the details. I think we all should, just to be safe. Bomber suggested the idea once, and it worked for a while, but it's hard to not post our hard-earned finds with details. Let's just all keep in mind that there are indeed jealous individuals out there that don't need to know all the details.

Sounds like a good idea to me Joe.

PS. My eyes are still burning from the tear gas from two weeks ago. :o

lol!

I'm for it. I'm new to this forum, and I believe that there is excess in many things including this hobby.
I also believe that it can be better if your out with people searching and recovering. I guess in my experience I put the word out on the open forum that I was new and wanted to show up someplace to hunt. I could have been one of 50 that showed up, and it could have been a nightmare. The couple of weeks I have posted to this board I have since pm'd some people and have gotten great suggestions on people to hunt with and where to go without contributing to a battalion of people showing up. There are plenty of people on this forum who want to help. WE are all just looking for a little common sense in it. JMHO Mike...

I am pretty sure Jeff in pa will be in shortly to erase the gossip/slander post. Lets not make rules and set guidelines for one stupid post. I enjoyed the Oct 12th hunt very much. If it had been thru p.m. only I would not have gotten to go. I come on this site to meet people, share stories, and get together to hunt.. not to hide in private messages. In fact we have a whole forum called "tnet member group hunts" just for people to get together and go on hunts. I enjoy reading all of your stories and watch all of your vids of camp finds. I especially appreciated the opportunity I had to hunt it on our group hunt. I hope we can do a group hunt again in the spring. We are not helping the growth of our hobby by hiding. If you guys want to hide or censor your words for no reason other than gossip paranoia of one person that's fine, But I am going to log on tommorrow like this never happened. I would rather the bad apple rotted on the ground instead of in the bushel.

Great counterpoint. I wasn't there, so I cant speak of the event. I'm a fan of Treasurefiends video's ,and I don't want to see things like that go away. His video's and others have been good learning tools for me. ;D

I feel the same way about this forum as you do Max. The stories, photos and videos are what keeps a lot of us going in this hobby. But there is someone out there who is going out of their way to disrupt the sharing of information and make people out to be outlaws. I don't think the posts and replies etc..., will stop, but the locations, where and when might not be posted.

This is supposed to be a friendly place where people can share their stories, finds and locations, but someone has crossed the line so why give them any more ammo.

My two cents
Mike

i say leave things as they are...keep locations and details on PMs

If you guys were all in hiding a few months ago when I bought my Ace I would have never found this site!

i hope to meet some of you soon.

Yeah sure, Bomber you could no more "go off the grid" than live without pulled pork and kielbasa. Lurking your new style? Love ya brother!

We want to get together to hunt? Say so and let's do it. Impartially and without reservations. Open invitation, we are not a formal club, just a bunch of yahoos having fun. And yes, we always do a service to the community where we practice our hobby whether in the form of historical insight or just plain picking up the trash. That doesn't always mean we won't leave some behind, we all have shovels and could dig a life-size hole pretty quickly if the opportunity presented itself.

The picture from the last hunt showed just a small sample of the good we do in recovering foreign material from our natural areas. We all know how many wood, drywall and sheet metal screws we recover annualy from kid's playgrounds, nails as well. Let's not forget the drugs, live ammunition, edged instruments and razor blades w ragularly remove from fragile and prying little fingers.

My hairy chin is up. I'm doing God's work here on Earth with a metal detector. We are Santa's little helpers, angels with coils, giants walking among mortals whether alone or together! Now sing my coil, SING!
