hey all since i cant get my shovel into the ground to dig coins i am forced to find coins another way so i have been hitting coin stores and coin shows with my youngest daughter. and in the meantime my daughter who is 10 has gotten interested in collecting ! so i have given her some "starter" coins and when we go to the coin shops she goes through the bargain bins picking up old UK pennies plus other interesting world coins . we then go home and pack them in 2x2's and identify them and store them in their binder. but this one has us stumped i dont believe it to be real but i dont want to not ID it ! so i come to you guys to see if anyone has seen this. it almost looks roman but i think its modern, it is really thin like the lid of a tuna can thin .its about a half inch accross the widest point and has a hammered look/ thanks for your help

Re: help with ID of a coin my daughter found today

I think it's a 'take off' on a Nazi coin, since the real Nazi coin is spelled reichpfennig and yours is Rech Pfenning. Breezie

I cant google it because I can read it but my guess is late 17th century German jeton. Someone else better with coins/counters will be along. Nice find.

all I can read is RECH PFENNING

Yep, that's what it is, but probably late 18th century/early 19th.

:icon_thumleft: It's a probably made by Lauer in Germany. An Alexander the Great counter- here is something about one of a similar design - translated from German:

http://translate.google.com/transla...2magnus%22&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=524&prmd=imvnso

Medal Count (Rechenpfennig) by Johann Jakob Lauer, accounting medal maker in Nuremberg from 1806-1852. On the front is Alexander the Great depicted abbreviated Allex: MAGNUS; the achtertzijde therefore a lion with the text RECH: PFENN: and the abbreviated name of the author IL The medal count is illustrated in Mitchiner under number 1992.

It's definitely real, but only worth a few dollars. Regardless of value I'd call it a good pick!

There is a set of 3 being sold on Ebay for $5.99. Normally, any information found there should be taken with a grain of salt, but the year listed seems to follow what the rest of you have found.
