Hey guys I found this last year and not until last night did someone point out to me that it had the possibility of being a coin. So here is what I know about it:

If you look close you can see an eagles head, with the wings, and then on the bottom it looks like a sunburst. Its almost exactly
(34MM) and it weighs on 7 grams and is extremely thin. There is no visable spot on the back for a shank to have been when you hold it in your hand.

Any Ideas :dontknow:

I know this is an old post so please dont shoot me for bringing it back up, but several people asked if I would post updated pics so upon request here they are

Re: Solved GW button Solved

Did you attempt to clean it at all? In the picture it looks more like corrosion than just a black button.

Is it green or black. If it's green I would try soaking in hydrogen peroxide with some light brushing. As the green crud thins, more of the detail might appear. There's usually very little risk doing this, but maybe a tiny bit, but I wouldn't think twice about trying it. The worst case scenario is probably being left with the same condition. But it's still your choice. A better description or pics might help with the decision.

I've lost track of how many buttons I've cleaned over the last ten years. (many hundreds) I'd definitely want to try and make a GW better if I could.

Its black, and thinly corroded, not so much on the front but the back is badly corroded. The front looks ok has a very thin layer of corrosion, in spots but it is extremely worn also.

The back means nothing, it's all about making the front better. Sometimes that thin corrosion can hide quite a bit of detail I can usually tell in person if cleaning has a chance, but impossible from pics. If it looks like corrosion over detail, and not just pitted metal, I'd probably try. Peroxide rarely makes anything with tough corrosion worse. It's when the detail is in the patina and could possibly be wash it away is when you have problems. I have cleaned a few black corroded buttons that had a lot hiding below, but again I can judge your's from the pics. Maybe soak it for 5 minutes and do a little brushing and see if any of teh black starts to come off. There is ways to attack it more, but I think the peroxide is always the safest when you're trying to figure things out.
