I know it is a battery (I thought it was a battery, but I just learned it is a capacitor), but I was wondering what kind and how old? I don't think it was a really old saw mill, probably one that closed in the 1950's,

I found some other things as well, some of these like the bridal piece were just things I finally cleaned up and were just in the photo group.

Comments on any of it is always appreciated!

Thanks for your help! Cindy

Future capacitors will be known at Flux Capacitors. They will/ are used for time travel. Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown used or will use the DeLorean DMC - 12 for time travel.

Looks like an A/C run capacitor. The specs are on the side. Toss it in the trash its damaged, modern and worthless.

The himge is probably also worthless.

I see a nice horse bit.

You're probably right, but I've seen start capacitors on larger three phase motors in addition to A/C compressors.

Best,
Scott

Thanks for that knowledge, I have it wrapped in a plastic bag, for now. Is it safe for the environment to throw away or should it be disposed of some other way?

Maybe but I dont think its a start capacitor. As far as I recall the old start caps were usually black , different shape and very high microfarad capacity. It has the shape of low microfarad (10-15uf) run cap. Ill bet if she looks carefully it will say between 5uf- 15uf, 370vac or 440vac, 50-60 Hz.... 40 years A/C and electric ;D

The old caps contained PCB fluid but it looks as if it probably all leaked out. No worry. I have had PCB fluid on my hands before. Toss it out with the trash. Wash your hands if any fluid leaked.

Look closely at the microwave cap you posted and you will see a 0.9uf (microfarad) less than 1uf, very small and no PCBs. Trust me she found an old A/C run cap. The rating on the older A/C caps is stamped on the side as opposed to being printed on the face. Another tip off is the red terminal marking. This is the older style. As was said, it could also be a run cap for a motor. Maybe Cindy will be nice enough to take a pic of the stamping to see if Im correct if anyone wants to disagree. ;D

Either way it doesnt matter, IF it contains PCB fluid it would have leaked out as you can clearly see the casing has been comprimised. No doubt also electrically discharged years ago.

Sorry to beat a dead horse but the pic below depicts 3 A/C capacitors. The first is a 5-7uf run cap, 2nd a larger run cap (7-40uf), 3rd pic is a start cap (100-300uf).

This pic shows the positioning on a A/C condensing unit. The cap Cindy found is on the right. The older ones were a bit larger (like the one found) and stamped on one edge. Only the older ones had PCB fluid.

I thought you might enjoy the AC lesson. :tongue3: or maybe I bored yall to death. Are there any questions? :D

Wow thanks. Your a real sport. :icon_thumright:

Yes its hard to read. I see MADE IN USA. I think I see 370 VAC. Its mostly part numbers. I think I see 410 V... The latest pics show clearly the casing is broken bad so there is no danger just toss it in the trash.

As far as I remember PCB fluid is oily and I dont see any.
