Well I think I know what it is but then again I'm not sure what it is.

Some sort of optical device. not sure how old though. searching for unioum on google hasn't gotten me very far and don't have much time atm.

anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Bob

Re: UNIOUM?

You may be reading the date wrong. I cant find it on the patent search. Can we see a close up?

I may be wrong and posted too fast because I see the patent was filed on Jun6, 1881 but granted at a later date of Jan3, 1882. :icon_scratch: Could you take a closer look at the patent date? Its definitely old but we need to get it right.

Re: Solved: The American Agriculturist Trichine Tester

Looking at the date it is certainly Jan. but there is a bit of corrosion after that. I'll try to get a closeup picture.

Re: The American Agriculturist Trichine Tester

It may be the lens to a Rochester Optical & Camera Co. Pony Premo No. 3 camera (circa 1899-1903) as shown here: http://www.mrmartinweb.com/medium.html
Just under the lens engraved into the brass it says "Bausch & Lomb Opt. Co. Pat. Jan. 6, 91"

I Googled that too Mack. It messed me up at first but I knew it couldnt be 1991 with the way the patent was written. 1991 patents are only a series of numbers. I still dont know what the patent is. Its either 1881 or 1887. http://www.oldstuffonly.com/patent_dates.asp

Eh, you did all the heavy lifting. I just noticed the "C" in what was first thought to be "Unioum" and decided to see what I could wrangle up.

Anyway, you definitely get the free pint of butter brickle on this one! :notworthy:

Re: Bausch and Lomb optics

I have been dealing in antique cameras for 20+ years. I agree that PBK hit it on the head with the id of a shutter (lens/shutter combo). If you look at the bottom of the shutter you will see a series of numbers. These will identify the where the diaphram is set. By what I can see, the numbering system is from the old "Uniform System" that was the standard in the 1880's (before the current "f/stop" system).

Great ID PBK!
