P.S. ~

I may not be the only one who has wondered how it was possible for a cookie cutter to have lost it's handle and cutting edge? If in fact it even had them to begin with. Which leads me to suspect it might not have been a "cutter" per say, but rather a "pattern" type where the user cut along the edges with a knife as opposed to just punching it out.

Question for cdsieg: Are there any tell-tale remanents of where a handle and full perimeter cutting edge used to be soldered to the star?

Thanks.

SBB
Thanks for the question and the reality check, the answer is, no. I do not see any signs of parts removed or broken off.
Its so corroded Cindy, I dont think you would be able to tell. I believe the ID is correct. It has bumps all over it.I can even see metal remnants on one side of the star..

I resized your picture to what I believe is close to actual size. Please correct me if I am wrong and, if so, how much I'm off by? Notice the red arrow pointing to what appears to be part of a clean-cut hole. Can you tell if the hole is original and punched? Or is it possibly just the result of corrosion? I'm keeping an open mind here and not jumping to any conclusions. But I am also genuinely curious about that so called hole. :icon_scratch:

Thanks a lot.

SBB, I have the star soaking in rust cleaner as I type; once I get it out and cleaned up I will take more photos next to a ruler. If I remember correctly, I think that part of the star is bent over and pressed on to the back. I will check it out and get better photos on here shortly. Thank you for all of your input on this item and the history lessons as well! :read2:

Thanks. And while we're waiting for the rust to dissolve, here are couple of links related to ...

Anne Gilbert ~ "The Antique Detective"

The first link covers a wide variety of topics that may be helpful for future "What Is It's?" And the second link is cookie cutter specific, and contains the info I posted earlier. You may even want to contact her and see what her opinion is regarding your star item.

We ID broken and corroded remnants of items like this for fun but you realize its so damaged there is probably no monetary or collector value and it cannot be restored.

bigcypresshunter's cookie cutter sure looks similar, but has holes that clearly go all the way through the metal. In reviewing the original photos, don't see any hole which is through the metal. Are there complete holes, or has the "thin sharp star" rusted completely, filling the holes? Also, bigcypresshunter's cookie cutter looks more aluminum than what seems to be ... iron, maybe? Something that rusts, at least.

Can you check whether the holes are completely through the metal, cdsleg?
The holes do go all the way through the star.

It is all fun to me, and I like the fact that you and others take guesses (mostly educated guesses) on my rusty gold. Even though sometimes I ask what something would be worth, it doesn't really matter to me. I like to know the value on things if I plan to donate them to a museum or leave them with a landowner. It is just my curiosity if I do ask the value. Now if I came across a treasure or gold bars... then that would be another story!

I have the star as clean as I can get it and it appears that bigcypress appears to be correct with his answer. I can see where the cookie cutter was attached from the top, to hold onto to squish into the dough, but I don't see how there could have been sides.

Updated Photos: Solved A thin sharp star, a ringed thing and Jack knife

I also cleaned up the scale, not quite as pretty as Breezie's, but a nice improvement!

LOL, I try to remove it, but even when I use the rust remover, it looks rustier when I am done! Any suggestions would be great! Do you like my green background? LOL

Great pictures! My compliments. :icon_salut:

I too am convinced now that the star is some type of cookie cutter. But who can say for certain what went on way back when? Maybe it never had the cutting sides and was more of a stencil type requiring the user to cut along the edges with a knife. Thus, my reason for suggesting (based on the evidence) to more accurately ID it as a cookie "Stencil" as opposed to a cookie "Cutter."

But even with that said; if it looks like a cookie cutter and walks like a cookie cutter, then its a dang cookie cutter! Right? :walk:

Nice ID Big Cy. Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Now if I could only get it to make me some darn cookies, then I would REALLY have something cool! Thanks for your feedback and compliment on the new photos. Cindy

Yes. If you have any special pieces, you could use electrolysis but you need someone else to explain the process.

Here is Breezies amazing before and after pics. I think CannonBallGuy did the excellent work. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,419156.0.html

Oops heres the amazing after pics. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,423067.msg3016733.html#msg3016733

We can only say its "most likely" a cookie cutter and I could be wrong.. In the pic I posted, the star actually overhangs the cutting edge that may have just been tacked on and broken off. :dontknow: All things considered, its the best guess so far.
