Social Media claims an idiotic, misguided collector in FL

FWC/Florida Wildlife Commission News Jan. 17
Silver Glen Springs is a "Heavy Use" tourist attraction within the Ocala National Forest
From their website: Ocala National Forest - Silver Glen Springs
"As the sun shines, rainbows play across the bottom of the crystal-clear spring basin at Silver Glen Springs, a beauty spot along the edge of the Big Scrub of the Ocala National Forest, with a spring run that pours out into Lake George, the largest of the St. Johns River Chain of Lakes, north of Astor. Both a popular day use recreation area and an important archaeological site, Silver Glen Springs showcases the delicate balance necessary between enjoyment of the outdoors and preservation of irreplaceable resources."

"LAKE/MARION COUNTY
Lieutenant Dan Dickson received information of a subject illegally taking artifacts at Silver Glenn Springs. During the investigation, officers discovered supporting evidence through a social media site and were able to determine a time frame in which the activity was occurring. Lieutenant Dickson, Officer Dana Klein and Officer Kelley Mims coordinated with National Forest Officers to target the illegal activity. A few days later, Lieutenant Dickson received a call from Officer Mims stating that a National Forest Officer was observing the suspect taking artifacts from the river bottom at Silver Glenn. Officer Klein and Lieutenant Dickson responded to the scene at which time the National Forest Officer stopped the suspect as he was exiting the water and found arrowheads and bones in his possession. Post Miranda, the suspect admitted to taking the items from the river bottom and stated that he had more items at his residence that he had taken from the park in the past. Officer Klein and Lieutenant Dickson followed the suspect to his residence where he turned over several arrowheads, pottery shards, chirt, and bones. The suspect was charged with collecting artifacts from state submerged lands without a permit. The bone fragments will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office to see if any may be human remains."
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Ignorance of the ramifications of one's actions is just plain stoooopid and in this case, quite bad. National Forest. Wrong. Trouble. Bad name for other collectors and this hobby.

There you go...Social Media. Bragging on-line about criminal activity. Stupid Hurts!

As for the cost to the state for making the arrest...I'm sure the fines will more than cover the cost.

so if thats their property and there are no watch out for arrowhead signs, u fall and one stabs u, CAN U SUE??

Should be able to. However, our odds of winning are slim to none. Lol. May catch a charge for reenacting primitive death. Some of the laws.... Lord I said have mercy! The punishment for jumping off of a building in NY is death. Only the American way. On a serious note, it seems as if the Gov. Is attempting to further banish the native American people, enforcing stuff like this.

i feel for the guy a little but everyone knows not to take anything from a state park, plants, animals even rocks.i hope the bones he had were not human, who knows what he"ll get for that.find creeks and springs on private property thats your best bet as i think that is were they did most of there hunting.but i only like the points.

Key words here "Social Media". Probably posted pictures with a smart phone that had the GPS enabled. They took the picture put it in Adobe and presto up pops latitude and longitude coordinates look on Google earth and there you are. Not rocket science.

i hope he gets a jury trial and everyone on it is a surface hunter,we could trump the laws that way

Really.. This guy was not the brightest.. I mean seriously imagine the conversation.. Yes officer I know i'm breaking the law and he lets just make it worse by me telling you I have more artifacts at my home... Sure that will help... Wow that gene pool has got to be about ankle deep.

For what it's worth, this site is monitored as well....

I am sure all sites are monitored. I only hunt on private property 8-)

Not excusing his otherwise stupidity, but once they had him, lying could only hurt him worse. It was only a matter of time before they would have a search warrant anyway. Once they have you, you might as well cooperate.

Do you have extra details, or did you fill in the blanks, and draw a conclusion based on what you think took place? I am not proud of this, but i have had run ins with the law. None artifact related, but, nonetheless, run-ins. They probably threatened that his charges would be worse if they had to go through the bureaucracy of a search warrant. Or promised a more lenient charge if he cooperated. I remember being a young adult (not sure of the age of the man that stands accused here) and hearing the empty promises roll off of the tongues of officers. I never got into a felony situation, so I always refused what ever deal the law offered. I always got a lawyer and came out better in the end. Knock on wood, my record is clean. I normally got into trouble for throwing huge parties. I remember being scared not to rat out who bought the kegs and such. This poor guy was probably fed a line that made him give in.

Seems to be the only safe way! Private property is probably where your best finds are any way!

Yeah it is hard to get permission sometimes but if you ask sometimes they say yes. I let them know I will respect their land. Thats where I was today but just havent found a single thing there yet. Unless you count a old sewer drain cover I found today. I didnt try to pick it up cause it was so heavy. It had some nice old decoration on the lid. But for all I know it might actually be covering a sewer.

Yes, some things are better left for the next man. I'd have to say sewer lid is one of those things. Lol

As for asking permission I have a method you might like. I walk up all nice and calm and ask about searching with the concept that I will share. If the agree or can't make up their mind, I make an offer and negotiate. If they refuse I just tell them that is okay with me...I'll just come back when they are not home and take it all! I have not been shot yet......

As a landowner myself, I sure hope you were kidding......

The feds love Facebook and braggers.

Just like the crooks love Facebook and people who post when they are going on vacation, when they will be home, and they can flip through their pics for the layout of their home and the goodies they have.

NO internet site, forum, or social media is secure. If you can see it on your screen so can the feds or hackers.

Tell ya the story of my fields. I went to them one day to pick up a trailer load I sod for the company I work for. Picked up a point while they were loading and then talked to the owner of the company and he said go ahead. Well he just rents the land. As I was walking a grid pattern in the fields I see a truck flying towards me from the farm house. An old timer rolls the window down and asks me what I lost. Says anyone walking like I was definetly lookin for something. I said just looking for arrowheads. Well luckily he got excited and told me he had a house full and axes too from when he used to plow. Gave me permission and I hunted it all that year. It's been planted again for sod and won't be cut for at least two years. I sure hope he remembers me then. As for posting on Facebook I never talk about this hobby there. I hunt some creeks and rivers and fields that I have permission on but I would rather keep this talk on here with a community that shares my love of rock.
