So where's all the investors?

Finding a site is great but conducting the investigation on a site is impossible because it costs money to get the things I need to get to it. A canoe, a detector, a car, and gas. I have talked to some who want documentation on what wreck it is, but, without doing the investigation on the site, it is impossible to identify.
I guess this is a catch 22 that will continue to go in circles until someone finally becomes a financier for the site.

For the most part treasure hunting is not a money making proposition. Of course there are rare exceptions and people willing to take the financial risk if the prize is big enough. My guess is their investment dollars go to hunters with proven track records and success at treasure retrieval.

Real treasure hunters don't need no funding, only Archies want other people to invest their money in the investigation so they can eat off every ones dime.:laughing7: Investors want more for their cash than a fat Archie.

Thanks SusanMN. Reminds me of the movie with Tom Cruise when he is applying for a job as a Nascar driver.

You got that right Sandman !:tongue3:

I will have to disagree with "real treasure hunters don't need funding". There are several cases in point and I am sure that if I did more searching, I would find more. What about the Odyssey who has gone public to raise funds for their operation? What about the infamous Mel Fisher, who also raised funds to get his Atocha treasures? I speak of Mel Fisher with the utmost respect and his crew as well. They have worked hard to get where they are at. No, my name is not Mel Fisher nor am I affiliated with the Odyssey, but, I am working towards finding my piece of the pie. Doing this takes money. There are investors out there, I just asked where they were at. Eating on someone elses dime is about as insulting as it gets. Archies I assume are people who are working hard at conducting their research, and wanting others to pay them for it?

Odyssey doesn't need private funding, they went public so the company 'owners' can operate more like a corporation that already has assets. Their research and methods are already very well proven and effective, as a publicly traded company with guaranteed yearly profit increases, by going public, they will also increase the value of the % of the 'company' they own. It's a smart move that yields more $$$ on somethign they already are guaranteed to make $$$ on. They also went public to promote the "treasure hunting" hobby/profession and allow the public to share in their success.

Mel Fisher was a pioneer. He and his family spent years and most of their own money dedicated to the pursuit and research of the 1715 fleet. They had very little support financially and were (from what I recall) 3-4 days away from having to call off their 15 yr search of this mysterious wreck before they got very lucky and located part of the Atocha wreck.

If you want to pursue something, the best way to gain investors/backers is to be prepared to pursue whatever it is you want without any backing. The more dedication and persistance you can show, either through years of dedication, or very very hard evidence to back your claim, the more likely you may be at gaining any support. Once you have proven yourself, your dedication, your persistance, and your research methods to be effective (basically....after your 1st-2nd successful find), THEN you may find that it will become much easier to gain backing/support much earlier in a project.

It's no different then a startup company vs a very well established corporation. Which one would you choose to believe in and give support to? It's really a no brainer.

As an aside, I'm not to far from Knox, if you would like to discuss this case you are interested in pursuing or perhaps want a confidential researcher to look into it as well, you are very welcome to message me.

Archies are professional archeologists. They tend to spend most of their time in a classroom or library, but when funded by a grant or their university, they hit the boonies, find things, then write books or papers about it. If you want a grant, take a grant writing class, do the work, get the money and then go search to your heart's content.

Keep an eye out on Graig's list and garage sales! I've even seen detectors go for cheap on ebay. I once bought a $400 dollar canoe for $125.00 at a garage sale and if I would of staked the place out they probably would have thrown it out anyway. Some people throw away half their belongings when they move!

Create a Business Plan with a precise Executive Summary. State what you believe your target is based on your research (without disclosing the exact location), list the equipment you will need and costs and expenses you estimate to be incurred to find and salvage your target. State what you are willing to offer the investor, create a Partnership (Joint Venture) draft agreement for the investor's eventual review. Be professional. All this can be done in a couple of pages.
Good luck,
Don....

Other than a canoe which can be bought fairly cheap (Mine was $200 used), the other items listed are basics that we all have to come up with our selves.

Thanks to all for the good info. I don't see myself becoming an archie anytime soon. I have looked at the grants that are available and because I am not affiliated with a school or government agency, I won't be getting anything anytime soon. I will have to see if persistence, dedication, and wishful dreams pays off.
I was watching a movie the other day and one person said to the other, "It is not the fact that you failed in what you believed in, it is the fact that you believed in it enough to try it that makes it important."

Just curious as to how far this site is located from you?

A financier will want a secure investment and a great piece of the pie in exchange for risk. That is how it is.
More, a proof of ownership of any recovery is required to retain it. Any thing else is gone to an investor, insurance company or other claimants and if nowhere else court costs and delays.
Get your ducks in a row before handing your secrets away and don,t expect any financial reward to avoid disappointment.
Better to do it on your own.Earn the capital, save it and invest it. Plan ahead. Then further your interest in this site you mentioned.Risk no more than you can afford to lose.
Now its a hobby.5 years from now what will you have to pursue it more? Who keeps all if any profit?. Success or failure on you, as it should be.
