Arty and I had a crazy day at a new field today. We headed to a new farm with over 190 acres to chose from. We both eye balled a hill with a pond in the distance and the rest is history. First target was a Dandy button from Arty. He must have found about 10 of them. I had a handful. We detected from 9:30 until about 1:00 when the snow got the best of us and wet our clothing. It was a frantic few hours of buttons upon buttons and 4 coins total. I found what appears to be a George II that was holed and a small farthing sized coin that appears to have Georges bust on the front and possibly a harp on the back. It was my best button day ever especially for hunting for only about 3 hours. I personally found 52 buttons, 1 is a War of 1812 Navy that I have yet to ID and the rest are almost purely colonial. Found a few other odds and ends but this place was chock full of buttons. The beard Ive been growing kept me warm until it froze..

Fantastic site and awesome items you guys pulled out. I just love those buttons. So personal

That was a heck of a hunt ! Some nice finds too!

Thanks guys. Hey Steve do you have any pictures of those Shield shaped items in use on the backs of coat tails? I am looking everywhere and cant find a definitive use for them. They seem more like they would be used on leather strap ends due to the large iron grommets on the back.

Very cool finds, I might of seen you guys down my way about a week ago. Allot of history in south Jersey. Great finds, congrats!

Nice finds Jim. Looks like you found a heck of a field to hunt. Congrats and continued good luck.

Jim, I have not seen these in use on a period jacket, but I haven't looked either. I am just passing the info on because I remembered the ID in American Digger a while back. The reason I remember the ID was because I have dug one like yours. I have dug lots of the strap tippet type. They have the prongs that would have went through the leather. The reader that submitted the ID to American Digger says the bosses on the back of the type like yours were for iron wire that could pass through clothing, but not leather. I don't know the answer. Like I said, just passing some info along that relates to your find.

I appreciate the info! They sure used some strange methods back in the day didn't they?

I'm not convinced by the type of prong agruement. It might be the right ID, I'm not sure. What I do know is that I have seen this type of attachment that does go on horse leather, so his agruement is void.

You are definitely hard core hunters. Great hunt. Hard work pays off!

I always thought they were for saddles..But i found 2 on the same site one was in an area where a horse could never go..So that made me wonder..These have been speculated thru all the forums and a picture ID is needed for this to rest..I also had the idea that they could have attached to a persons leather belt to hold a Cloak back on each side..
I am on a mission now..

Blaze that is probably the most logical idea I have heard. I'm going with that idea. Wires and such sound like a pain in the ass to use for cloth. Why not make it more of a button style loop on the back if it were for cloth.
