I really like this little thing I found today and I think someone here will know just what it is. ;D

My detector puts it in the high bottle cap range.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's called a saddle shield. There have been quite a few posted on TN in the past. Great find.
Here's a few pictures. See item #7 in Crouch's CW Artifacts book.

Miner I am not sure what he found is what you are showing. Those you are showing are usually hollow on the back and are affixed to leather straps on the saddle. What he has has a thick back and that center iron looks almost like the remains of a button shank. But I don't think that is correct. Just not sure what it was used for.

Duggap,
I'm pretty sure the ones shown in Crouch's book are solid and not hollow. Here's three of my own and one is almost a dead match for the one in Crouch's book. These are all solid one piece with two attachment hooks.

I must agree though I am baffled by the one attachment point. :icon_scratch:

The reverse fitment is more consistant with furniture decor :-\

Those are both possibilities.. thanks!

I did some checking around and the idea that maybe it is the end of a leather belt came up :icon_scratch:

the fitting is too substantial for that, & doesn't really look like any strapend I've seen

I've been searching through old posts here on TN, and have found many. Buckleboy has it ID'd as a harness boss.
Do a search on "saddle shield" and you will find a lot of previous posts. It always seems to be a mystery item. ;D

maybe my memory is going, but I don't remember them all having such heavy duty fittings? (shape & size are about the same)

Ok I found this thread where Buckleboy posts this pic-

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,118603.0.html

index.php

which does make sense :icon_thumleft:

I'm thinking that has got to be it. Though I haven't seen a pic yet of one of these with only one 'heavy duty' attachment point.

You say so much with so few words :laughing7:

Are you telling me to green check this? Or that is a un-green checkable mystery factor? :D

not enough prove for a greencheck unless you want it. I've seen that fitting on lots of furniture pieces & thats all I can say, doesn't mean it went on furniture, just seems over the top for leather.

Hey Bramble, I'm thinking it's a saddle shield. What metal is the actual shield? Is it painted black on the front? Neat find, Breezie

Thanks Breezie ;D I'm not exactly sure what kind of metal it is. My limited knowledge of these kind of things guesses that it is brass and plated with another kind of metal - not painted- the plate almost looks like the color and feels like the tombac button I found at this site.

Is that possible? Were things ever plated with tombac?

Here is one almost the same :) A heart-shaped mount, probably from harness, with a single steel attachment point at the centre.

aha! Very good - thank you :icon_thumleft:

UKDFD are good at giving references when they exsist, notice none given & 'probably from harness'.
So yes it could probably be one or probably be a furniture
