Small Ornamental Shield on St. Augustine Beach
I found a dense iron oxide (mostly) encrusted object Tuesday, May 7th, 2013. It was at the extreme high tide mark, by a beach walkover in Saint Augustine, FL. It did have a smooth cream-colored soft deposit on one side. I knew metal was in there as I could see a metal plate.
I started chiseling away the much less dense outer oxides and eventually discovered what looks to be a very small (about 6 inches) ornamental shield with the letter G or Q on it. It is metal. It shines when first exposed. I think the other pieces were used to attach it to something perhaps a door or wall? About 1/3 is of the shield is missing. I think it is from a shipwreck. Might not be ornamental. Possibly a piece of horse head shaffron?
