I went out for a hunt tonight with my cousin. He borrowed his friends detector which is an old basic Fisher.

The plan was he would hunt in front of me, and when he got a signal I'd come check it out with him.. as he doesnt have a pinpointer.

We dug up plenty of junk as always. I found a couple of old spoons and some clad including a '53 penny.

Then, cousin got a nice signal. I went over to investigate. and we found this old axehead.

I found two others this summer, but this one is smaller. Cute huh!?

Just so the girlfriend doesnt get annoyed with me, Ill do this outside, lol... :protest:

There are no fumes, but when ya toothbrush all that rust off each time, it can get a little messy. You should've seen my girl's face when I clogged the shower drain with tar from an old piece of brass. :o Took a long while to live that one down... :'(

Haha, I can only imagine the wrath....

She must have unleashed the Kraken. lol

Ill be cleaning it outdoors tomorrow. Any chance that a marking would be left behind if there is one?

You won't know about the marking until you see how much damage the rust has done--but that is no different from electrolysis. This method though, with evaporust, will take more than an afternoon to complete--so make sure you have a tool shed or some good place to put it overnight. Some of my really encrusted pieces I have left for close to a week.

Re: Small Old Axe

That's a great little trade/belt axe! Definitely an old one! The zinc and lye method really isn't that dangerous...just take precautions and don't get it on your skin.

I don't think you are going to find EvapoRust at the Canadian Tire...it's not a readily available product in our neck of the woods.

Re: Small Old Axe

There's some Evapo-Rust at Canadian Tire SJ! I have a bottle right now.

If there is none in your area, I'll bring some to you hehe.... it will just cost you a swinging walk about. :)

And thanks Buckle for the tips, I'll let it sit for days. :notworthy:

Only on detecting days for me now. I don't mind making it at home now and it's much easier and cheaper.

Cool, I'll ask my CT to order it in if yours turns out good!

Re: Small Old Axe *UPDATE

Greetings,

I used the solution on the axe over two sessions.

As you can see in picture #3, the hole was so corroded that it was non existent anymore.

I decided to take it easy on the back section of the axe (sorry, dont know axehead terminology yet).

The stuff definitely works.

This axehead was in really rough shape... but the Evaporust worked pretty well.

A nice before and after in this shot...

Here's the other side...

And finally, the destroyed end. This end looks so corroded, it may all Evaporust away. lol

Even if there was a marking, I doubt it survived...

Glad it's working for ya! Those are really nice results. And that is a great find.

Love the old copper and the trade axe. :o
That penny should clean up nice. :icon_thumright:

How would you clean a penny like that?

Electrolysis?

This guideline is for reference ony, please use your own discretion when cleaning your finds.

"Peroxide removes all of the soil and organic material and leaves the metal. Any copper coin that loses detail after soaking in peroxide, was not destroyed by the peroxide, it was destroyed by the corrosion that was holding the "details" you saw before cleaning. Peroxide removes dirt and grime, not solid metal, but when those who say they lost the date or details . . . that was because the metal was severely corroded underneath (exfoliated corrosion) or just plain corroded. When you soak a coin in peroxide it loosens the corroded, flaky metal off , especially if you rub the weak areas."

I like this idea. What have you cleaned with it and how?
