I went out for a hunt tonight with my cousin. He borrowed his friends detector which is an old basic Fisher.

The plan was he would hunt in front of me, and when he got a signal I'd come check it out with him.. as he doesnt have a pinpointer.

We dug up plenty of junk as always. I found a couple of old spoons and some clad including a '53 penny.

Then, cousin got a nice signal. I went over to investigate. and we found this old axehead.

I found two others this summer, but this one is smaller. Cute huh!?

I also found this 192x penny.

Re: Small Old Axe

I'm guessing so.

I found musketballs nearby, so could be that old for sure.

I thought it was a tomahawk at first... but I don't know much about axes.

Re: Small Old Axe

Re: Small Old Axe

Thats for sure IP!

I was a lil further inland this time, up on the hills...

Re: Small Old Axe

Yes, the style/design/lines of that axe head would make it very, very old.

Re: Small Old Axe

Check out my post in the cleaning and preservation section on iron relic cleaning. That is a $$ find. I do hope you'll clean it up to see if it is marked.

Stuff like this really get my blood pumping!

Congratulations,

Buckles

Yes, stick on land, and hunt those high spots. There's so many great finds waiting for you... and I don't think you have any idea just how many there is. This should only be the start!

This guideline is for reference ony, please use your own discretion when cleaning your finds.

"Peroxide removes all of the soil and organic material and leaves the metal. Any copper coin that loses detail after soaking in peroxide, was not destroyed by the peroxide, it was destroyed by the corrosion that was holding the "details" you saw before cleaning. Peroxide removes dirt and grime, not solid metal, but when those who say they lost the date or details . . . that was because the metal was severely corroded underneath (exfoliated corrosion) or just plain corroded. When you soak a coin in peroxide it loosens the corroded, flaky metal off , especially if you rub the weak areas."

Re: Small Old Axe

Thanks for the tip BB...

I saw Romeo clean up one of his with a dangerous complicated method. I was too scared to try it... but if I'm careful and do it outdoors, it shouldn't be too hard.

I'm off to check your post now, lol. Perhaps a slightly safer method than his. :P :read2:

Cool! I'd love to see it. Basically you just cover it with EvapoRust then cover the container so it doesn't evaporate. And if you can tap any rust off, and wash all the dirt off before you start, that'll help it out.

I also help it out as it goes by scraping rust and rinsing down the sink--then back in the soak, then scrape/tap/rinse again.

Best Wishes,

Buckles
